Hammel: I can't say for certain, cer-tain, because McCarthy is more popular with the young than with the older voters, but I do believe that a victory for McCarthy in the mock convention will give him great impetus in the actual Utah Democratic Convention. h By JOEL KESTER c7! ' Chronicle: Do you feel the polls conducted in the Union Building accurately reflect student opinion? iiijjj Hammel: Yes, I think that the iomi poll definitely indicates that the itroi students at the University are in Jtat, favor of McCarthy and the issues he supports. However I do realize 0lj that the participants in the poll I k may not reflect the over-all opin ions of the delegates to the convention. conven-tion. I feel that there is still a lot of work ahead if a victory is to be recured. Chronicle: Have you received much support from students? Hammel: Definitely! McCarthy has pulled support not only from the general studentbody, but members mem-bers from the other committees as well. The Kennedy for President Committee headed by Fred Mora-marco Mora-marco and Bill Sullivan threw its support behind McCarthy when it was thought that Kennedy was not going to run, and even though Kennedy Ken-nedy is now running in the campaign, cam-paign, these supporters have remained re-mained faithful to McCarthy. McCarthy Rally Chronicle: What activities have you planned in your mock-campaign? Hammel: On April 2 we have planned a rally at the Hotel Utah. This rally is planned in cooperation coopera-tion with Bob Wolbach, head of "Concerned Democrats" committee, commit-tee, which has the goal cf getting McCarthy nominated in the Utah Democratic Convention in July. There will be refreshments served and televisions will be provided so that those attending can watch the returns of the Wisconsin nomination. nomina-tion. We feel that McCarthy will possibly win the Wisconsin nomin ation because of the impetus that he gained in the New Hampshire primaries in which he got 42 per cent of the votes. Then on Thursday, Thurs-day, April 4, the McCarthy Committee Com-mittee will meet at the Union Building, Build-ing, room 324, at 8:00 p.m., to hold a strategy meeting to prepare for the meeting Friday night in which the party platform is constructed. Vietnam Question Chronicle: What issues do you think wi'l be most important at the platform meeting? Hammel: I think that the main question will be the U.S. involvement involve-ment in the Vietnam War. I am sure that both McCarthy and Kennedy Ken-nedy supporters will attempt to put an anti-war plank in the platform. plat-form. Chronicle: What resistance do you think you will get from Johnson John-son supporters when you propose this peace policy? Hammel: I think that between the supporters of Kennedy and McCarthy, we will be able to get a peace policy into the platform. Chronicle: What do you propose to do if it becomes evident that McCarthy cannot win the nominations nomina-tions as the balloting progresses? Hammel : We have not, nor do we propose to make any deals with Kennedy supporters before the convention, con-vention, but if it does become evident evi-dent that McCarthy cannot beat both Kennedy and Johnson, then we will consult with Kennedy supporters sup-porters in order to work out a compromise that will insure that a peace candidate will be nominated. |
