Show Editorial Hypocrisy! The Chronicle recently gave a warm non-endorsement to Phil Hansen's non-candidacy for the U.S. Senate, and in so doing we alluded to the Attorney General's athletic prowess. prow-ess. It has come to our attention that Mr. Hansen has demonstrated dem-onstrated peerless talent in yet another field that we believe deserves public attention. Perhaps like no other, Phil Hansen can talk out of both sides of his mouth at the same time truly amazing ! One of the Attorney General's more quotable quotes is that "the law ought to be the same for everybody." We agree 100 per cent. For a starter, how about making the law the same for the University Board of Regents as it is for Phil Hansen? Ever anxious to do a favor for his old alma mater, Phil high-handedly scuttled a proposal of the Board of Regents to purchase a certain type of seating for the new Sports Complex. Com-plex. The board had adopted a bid based on certain specifications specifica-tions which the board felt would provide stadium chairs of a higher quality than would be obtained by accepting an alternate alter-nate bid at a lower price. Phil's opinion in September was that the State of Utah andor its subdivision had to accept , the lowest bid. While the pitfalls of such a myopic purchasing policy are obvious, what really appalls us is the double standard Mr. Hansen foists upon us. Lo and behold, it seems that at about that same time, Phil purchased 2 1 briefcases from Broadway Shopping Center at a cost of over $400. To quote Mr. Hansen, Han-sen, "We purchased the briefcases because my staff had nothing noth-ing to carry papers in. What are they supposed to do, carry all those papers in their pockets? I purchased them from Broadway Shopping Center because I saw what I wanted there." Parenthetically, Abraham Lincoln carried his papers in his hat but the clincher came when Phil went on to say, "Is a subordinate (a purchasing agent) able to tell a state official what brand to buy and where to buy it?" The worm has turned, and the Chronicle calls them as it sees them. It appears to us that this latest interference by the attorney general in University fiscal matters is nothing less than arrogant hypocrisy. Ho hum. |
