Show Death Of God RHA Lecture Series Topic Dr. Jerry Irish, professor of theology the-ology at Stanford University, presented pre-sented three distinct viewpoints which focused around the subject of tne extinction ot God. In the first lecture oi a series sponsored by the Residence Halls Association, the question "Is God Dead?" was discussed by Dr. Irish in front of approximately eighty people in Van Cott Lounge. In his opening speech, Dr. Irish pointed out three stands which had been taken by prominent theologians: theolo-gians: first, that the death of God is a linguistic matter; second, that men on earth are experiencing the absence or loss of a god; and third, that the death of God came about through the crucifixion of Christ. He also stated, "Darwin's Evolution Evo-lution Theory is one of the things which has narrowed the role Of God ' in the world." He felt that the last two world wars had clearly brought the death of God into focus for all countries. "Where was He when millions of Jews were being executed in Germany?" Ger-many?" he asked. Dr. Irish also indicated that the United States is supporting a contradiction con-tradiction of its stand. He stated, "Throughout our constitution and local laws, we have felt the influence influ-ence of God. Our national motto is 'In God We Trust'. Yet, the strongest strong-est nation in the world is carrying out the extermination of one of the smallest nations, while millions of men are being killed." Thus, he felt that the people of America were experiencing a false or artificial connection with any type of deity. In addition, Dr. Irish traced the concept that a supreme deity could not be proven by an material observation. ob-servation. He questioned, "How can we differentiate between a spiritual non-material being and the complete com-plete absence of any being?" Dr. Irish concluded by pointing out that the decision on the death of God was an individual, personal one that each person must make. |
