Show Exit ROTC .? The Chronicle's feud with the campus cam-pus military is ended. Yesterday we attempted to get the question of the validity of the ROTC system off the editorial page and to the students. The elected representatives of the student body, the Executive Council, decided the University is enhanced en-hanced by the presence of the ROTC and voted against continuing the controversy. con-troversy. We will abide with the body's decision. We feel, although, that ROTC has too long enjoyed an undisputed position posi-tion of dominance and should be taken to task at every instance of suppression or threat of suppression of thought. These instances have occurred in the past and will, no doubt, occur agin. We do not condemn the Executive e ' Council for their actions. It was only 1 after much heated debate that the mo- tion passed. Thus it has been indicated '4 that we achieved at least a partial ' victory in that the students have be- V come aware of what the ROTC k Indeed, even the candidates enrolled B; in the system have learned by the ex- ! perience just what it is they have. joined. 1 l We hope the Executive Council J will endeavor, in the future, to tale 4 the ROTC under study. Judging from 1 - J the response of the Council, several (Continued on Page 3) m x 5SuedfromPaSe2) , are still unanswered. An ad ;1' mmittee commissioned by stu-11 stu-11 iemment might be in order to J investigate the military role i He still feel strongly that the k uc has no place on campus. Its .. of intelligence in defending its M "svitemis enough evidence to war-k war-k . 'aCtion. This coupled with the in-? in-? :jt onesidedncss of the military l)it be sufficient to call students to t gainst the system, rather than d them into the system. jf" the military had used the wits , apparently possess they would .collectively ignored us. Instead - showed their stupidity with rash frJ abased on little or no thought. In L. one mstance a cadet went so far as to hreaten a concerned person connected connec-ted with the Chronicle. This was an utterly stupid move. In this case it would be wise for the military to look again into the cadet's capabilities. If he is liable to make a rash judgment on the campus level he is liable to make the same mistake on the battlefield where men's lives are at stake. We petition the ROTC to make a thorough investigation of their system to insure that the intellectualism of the University is not sacrificed for the military's mili-tary's sake. Now that the controversy is over we could say what one military man muttered to me recently, "I don't agree with what you say but I will defend de-fend your right to say it." We could, but we won't. |
