Show Utes Face Tough Defense By Charlie Zito Sports Writer When Utah travels to Tempe Saturday they will be facing one of the toughest defensive lines in the country in Arizona State. ASU has solid Jesse Fleming (223)) and Steve Tamarac (200) at ends, John Hansen (255) and Larry Hendershot (239) at tackles tack-les and All-America nominee Curley Culp (260) at middle guard. This fivesome has held opponents to an average of 93 net yards per game. ASU Has Weight Advantage The Utes counter with tough Jerome Lawson (187) and Bill Morley (185) at ends, All- America Amer-ica candidate John Stipech (235) and Bruce Bean (205) at tackles and Tim Burnett (205) at middle guard have held opponents to a net total of 88 yeards per game rushing. ASU should carry a decided weight advantage into the contest. con-test. The Devils tentative starting start-ing units average 210 pounds on offense and 215 on defense. Utah's corresponding figures are 199 and 192. A Real Dogfight The four game series between these two clubs has been a real log fight. It stands at 2-2 with SU winning in 1962 (35-7) and L963 (30-22) and the Redskins prevailing in 1961 (28-26) and L964 (16-3)... . This is probably the most ;rucial game in the conference his week because the winner of he game will still be in the run-ling run-ling for the title. The Utes own i 2-1 record in league play and L the Sun Devils are at 1-1. Utes to Take to Air The Utes game plan will probably prob-ably be to fill the air with football's foot-ball's unless either Ben Woodson Wood-son or Elwood Stewart can bust the tough defensive wall of the rugged Devils. Curley Culp will be the big man the Utes will have to solve in order for their running game to go. Culp is a huge man at 260 pounds and an even six feet. He has been the WAC heavyweight wrestling champion for the past two years and is even stronger when it comes to bringing enemy ball carriers to the turf. Injuries will probably hurt both squads with the Utes probably prob-ably hurting more than the two. All-America candidate Pat Mc-Kissick Mc-Kissick as linebacker had a knee in a cast last week and didn't play against New Mexico. The cast came off Monday, but his availability to the Utes is doubtful. Rokita Out The Devils probably are hurting hurt-ing just as bad as all around Bob Rokita is a doubtful starter. Rokita does the field goal kicking, kick-ing, the extra point man, kick off man and top scorer. With a man like this out of action the Sun Devils could be in trouble. Arizona State and Utah have faced two common opponents. ASU lost to Wyoming, 23-6, and to Washington State, 24-15. Utah also lost to Wyoming, 40-7 but topped Washington State, 26-15. Other Redskin wins came over Oregon, 17-14, Arizona 24-19, and New Mexico 27-0. |
