Show Pres. Fletcher Opens Thurs. Lecture Series President James C. Fletcher's remarks on, "The University of Utah: Prospects and Problems for the Decade Ahead," will open the Twelfth Annual Thursday Lecture Series, Thursday, October Oc-tober 6. He plans to speak on the issue in terms of the aims and goals of the University and the current appeal now pending in the state legislature. The Lectures will be held every Thursday this quarter, at 12:05 in Orson Spencer Auditorium. The program is set up to provide pro-vide extra classroom intellectual experience in adjunction to the general education program. Dean Kadisch, Dean of the College of Letters and Science, said, "The Thursday Lecture Series provides pro-vides an opportunity for all students stu-dents to hear faculty members discuss their fields." He also said the program gives entering Freshmen a chance to participate in wider University experience. The concept for the series originated with Dr. Homer Durham, Dur-ham, former Academic Vice President, twelve years ago. As with all programs the format has changed over the years. Originally the lecture series was part of Freshman Orientation Course. Now attendance is purely elective, open to all students. The lecture series is aimed at the general student and his interests. Durham felt when the series began "it would serve the student who attended and would enrich the University educational edu-cational experience." The program for the rest of the quarter is : Theater of the Absurd, David E. Jones, Associate Asso-ciate Professor of Theatre; On the Origin of Life, Elie A. Shne-our, Shne-our, Associate Professor of Molecular Mo-lecular and Genetic Biology; Education Ed-ucation is the only Defense Against Nuclear Fallout, Max L. Williams, Dean, College of Engineering; En-gineering; Who Dealt This Mess?, Stanley W. Crawley, Professor Pro-fessor of Architecture; and the final lecture November 10 will be The Value of the Effort, or Worth Doing Badly, Clarice E. Short, Professor of English. Professor Pro-fessor Short will also be reading some of her own poetry. |
