Dave Varvel (4-7) will start tonight in the opener and you can bet Varvel wants to get in the playoffs with Arizona and will be giving it everything he has. JOHN Nordquist (4-2) and Dennis Udy (5-2) will pitch the morning - evening doubleheader on Saturday. It was questionable this week whether Udy would pitch or not for the Wyoming series, but the injury he received against Idaho State on Monday wasn't as bad as suspected. If the Utes can take the series against Wyoming they will play Arizona, winner of the Southern Division, next Friday and Saturday, Satur-day, May 27, 28 at Derks Field in a three game series for the Western AC championship. Should the Utes win or not, the whole baseball team and their fine coach, Pres Summer-hays, Summer-hays, deserves a lot of credit for a fine baseball season. By CHARLIE ZITO Chronicle Assoc- Sports Editor When the Utah Redskins face the Wyoming Cowboys in Laramie Lar-amie tonight and tomorrow they will be facing the most crucial three game series of the year. THE PRESSURE is on both clubs but more so on the Pokes who are at four wins and five losses in the conference. In order or-der for Wyoming to win the conference they must sweep the three game series. For the Redskins it is equally equal-ly a task as they must win two games to win the Northern Division. Di-vision. If the Utes win one and the Cowboys win two it will throw the Northern Division race into a three way tie and will not do the Pokes nor the 'Skins any good since the WAC states that the team with the most runs in conference play will be declared the winner, which is the BYU Cougars. IN THE 7:30 game tonight, the Pokes will lead off with captain Gordy Westhoff (.305) at third base; playing right field will be Ev Fefus hitting (.264); Gary Kollmaw will be the shortstop short-stop batting (.289); basketball star Mike Eberle will handle the job at first base (.258); Jerry Marrion will play centerfield (.329). The fleet Marrion leads the club in stolen bases with 25. John Vass, the clubs leading hitter at .342 will play left field, Dick Brickey will handle the chores behind the plate batting (.248) and Mike Hutchins will round out the pokes infield at second base hitting (.245). The Cowboys have stolen over 100 bases this season and a handful of Pokes have over 20. In one game against Brigham Young, the fleet-footed Cowboys Cow-boys stole seven bases. Jerry Marrion, the fine centerfielder, stole four including home. THE COWBOYS will probably throw John Hilts tonight, and tomorrow will go with Mike Cassidy and Gary Foshic. For the Redskins, they will Wyoming's Gordy Westhoff (left) and Utah's Jerry Pullman are opposing third basemen in this weekend's crucial series between the Utes and the Cowboys. Westhoff, a mainstay on the Wyoming basketball team in the winter, is hitting .305, |
