Show Jackson: Starting Soph resulted in quick Redskin baskets.. bas-kets.. This Savannah, Georgia boy was at his best in the Cincinnati game. Utah lost, but Jackson turned in a fine- 17 point effort, played a fine defensive game, and grabbed some pretty good rebounds. Merv gave every indication of being a hot basketball prospect during his high school career. At Savannah's Beach High School, he averaged 23.4 points per game and was all-city three years in a row. Not only that but he was Most Valuable Player Play-er in the state during his junior and senior years. By MAC BACKMAN Chronicle Assoc Sports Editor Look for sophomore Merv (the Magician) Jackson to be one of the greats of Utah basketball. THIS KID can do everything. Last season as the top star of Coach Jerry Pimm's frosh, all the 6-2 leaper did was score 22.7 points and grab 18 rebounds per game. That rebound per game average was the best ever in Utah freshman history and his takedown total (234) exceeded ex-ceeded Billy McGill's freshman record. Remember that "The Hill" was 6-9 as a freshman. Leading the frosh in rebounding rebound-ing is a tribute to Jackson's fantastic fan-tastic jumping ability. On a team full of jumpers like Utah, it was only natural that the Magician would move into Coach Jack Gardner's starting lineup this season. So far, Merv has been playing guard and has done a fine job in this relatively strange position. In 13 games of varsity action, he's scored nine points per game not bad for a sophomore. JACKSON HAS even partly overcome the typical sophomore's sopho-more's problem of "How to play defense and be a success." He still makes mistakes in guarding his man but he does all right on the other half of the court. Not only is Jackson a predig-ious predig-ious leaper, but also a versatile floorman.
