VOTING OF the all-WAC is an accumulation of conference all-opponent teams. This year, each team and each sports information in-formation director voted for a first team and a second team with the stipulation that they may not vote for players from their respective schools. Two points were given for each first-place first-place vote and one point for a runner-up selection. By MAC BACKMAN Chronicle Assoc. Sports Editor Three Utah players were named to the 1965 first team all-Western all-Western Athletic Conference grid squad, according to Paul W. Brechler, WAC commissioner. Tackle John Stipech, center Pat McKissick, and end Mike Butera, Bu-tera, all juniors, were the Utes named to the WAC "sweet eleven." STIPECH AND McKissick were defense bulwarks all the 1 year for the Redskins. McKissick, McKis-sick, a hard-nosed linebacker, led the Utes in number of tackles tack-les while Stipech added more honors to his outstanding '64 season. Both will be back next year and should have even more outstanding seasons. Butera, a junior college transfer, trans-fer, was third in the WAC in pass receiving in his rookie season. Noted for the spectacular spectacu-lar catch, Butera's hands won at least a couple of games for the Utes. This all-Conference team was selected by players and sports information directors of WAC schools. Six juniors, three sophomores, and only two seniors sen-iors have berths on the all-WAC team. BYU LANDED three players on the all-WAC while Wyoming and New Mexico had two arid Arizona State one. Virgil Carter, BYU's pin- point passing quarterback and Phil Odle, the Cougar's record-setting record-setting end both received 19 points in the balloting to earn the right to "lead" the all-WAC team. Carter, an honor student, was the WAC's passing and total offense leader while Odle, only a sophomore, caught 11 touchdown passes (already a WAC career record) and scored 66 points to lead the league. John Ogden, the yardage-eating fullback, was the other Cougar player to earn first team honors. Ogden led the WAC in rushing. BYU Coach Tom Hudspeth Huds-peth has a lot to look forward to as Carter, Odle, and Ogden will all be back next year. NEW MEXICO landed sophomore sopho-more tackle Paul Smith and guard Bob Bouyer while Wyoming's Wyo-ming's claims to fame were junior jun-ior guard Jerrold Durling and sophomore halfback Jim Kiick. Ben Hawkins, Arizona State's pass-catching halfback, rounds out the WAC all-conference contingent. con-tingent. Six of the first eleven were named as conference backs and linemen of the week during the season Carter, Hawkins, Ogden, Og-den, Smith, Odle, and Butera. Several of last year's all-conference players failed to make a '65 first team berth. Stan Quin-tana, Quin-tana, New Mexico's do-every-thing back and '64 WAC player of the year, failed to do as well this year but still scored high in the honorable mention category. cate-gory. Wyoming defensive end Darryl Alleman, another '64 all-WAC, all-WAC, also was an honorable mention choice. UTAH PLAYERS who were named on the honorable list include in-clude Frank Mazzotta, senior end; Dario DeBenedetti, junior guard; Rich Groth, senior quarterback, quar-terback, and Marv Lowery, junior jun-ior fullback. DON STEPAN, 6-3 Hillcrest ace, tanked 19 and Brent Steed and Dave Osborn each scored 16. Granite High all-stater, Gary Arnoldus tanked 17 and Ray Parry, all-state from Bountiful hit 14. The Papooses, under the guise of Coach Jerry Pimm, will face competition from other frosh squads and junior college teams after the first of the year. |
