Show Debate Squad Cops Honors , At Tournament Womens' Team Places First; Campus Nabs Sweepstakes rm-' "r ' '" --.J"" W' . The tournament also featured j, -i.dne the trophies that they won in the Western glrtheVgest tournament held in the U.S. during fall quarter, are from left to right, Dick Brown, Dick Ostlund, Linda Jensen, Chad Hansen, and Bonnie Thorup. Competing in the largest tournament tour-nament held in the United States during fall quarter the University's Universi-ty's debate squad gained top honors this past weekend. THE WESTERN States Speech Association held their annual tournament on Nov. 25, 26, and 27 in Al'buquerque, N.M. The University entered five teams; three in Senior Men's Division, and one each in Senior Women and Junior Men. In the traditional Oxford debate de-bate Bonnie Thorup. and Linda Jensen copped First Place honors in a large field of senior women. Cross Examination Debate in which the University did not participate. IN THE FOUR individual events the University also fared well. In expository, a difficult impromptu competition, Chad Hansen placed second and Dick Ostlund third. Lee Burnham was a finalist in the same event. Steve Wood was a finalist in the difficult field of extern- poraneous speaking. THIS RECORD gained a top t total points for the squad and they were awarded the Senior Sweepstakes Trophy. The trophy is somewhat different in that it contains a clock. ; i , : Others who participated were Grant Kesler, and Blaine Carlton and Kay Israel. Carlton and : Israel competed in the Junior : Men's Division and won four of i their six debates. The assistant debate coaches accompanied the squad. Dick Birrel, Gay Dalebout and Lawrence Law-rence Silvey have been coaching coach-ing the teams in individual study groups all quarter. GEORGE ADAMSON, debate coach, commented that he was extremely pleased at the showing show-ing in Al'buquerque. Mr. Birrel commented that this tournament is the largest and most- important held fall quarter in "America. He added further that this is the best showing the University has made at Western since 1958. The eight trophies, along with others won this quarter, can be viewed in 313 Kingsbury Hall. |
