Show I profe To Air Law - Justice Issue 4 I V i . I , J ' -1 'Great Issues' to Feature Papers by Bennett, Read Wallace R. Bennett, professor and assistant dean of the College of Law, and Waldemer P. Read, professor of philosophy, will present papers at the second program of the 13th annual Great Issues Forum tonight at 8:00 in Orson Spencer Hall Auditorium. THIS YEAR'S FORUM deals with "Great Issues in American Social Morality," and tonight's discussion, chaired by professor of philosophy Obert C. Tanner, will focus on "Law and Rebellion in a Free Society." Mr. Bennett's paper approaches the law and rebellion issue, which he considers "one of the truly transcendent domestic problems prob-lems of the American nation in our day" from the point of view of a trained lawyer. "REBELLION," HE POINTS out, "is not only imminent, but actually taking place." But behavior generalized as rebellion must be sorted into "degrees" according to its "potential threat and actual violence." The freedom of expression concept, though not the specific unlawful conduct behind organized group sit-ins in privately-owned establishments, should be "encouraged as a safety valve of a democratic society." Dr. Read, under the title "Pertaining to the Ideal of Freedom Under Law," will trace the tendency towards lawlessness and rather grievous injustices that characterize our society. HE WILL ALSO develop an inquiry into why there seems to be an unwillingness to buy the ideal of freedom under law. His conclusion is that "laws don't give us freedom." But, Dr. Read warns, "the state which is the United States of America, though she falls short of the ideal of justice, is not completely lacking in that virtue ... To scrap her, and begin again from scratch, would be a most foolish thing even to contemplate." 1 - . .. 1 in mi. 11111 11 m a. Wallace R.
