The Utah defensive line held the Ducks to only 97 yards on the ground but the defensive secondary gave up 286 through the air. Mistakes again hurt the green Redskins who turned over the ball twice on fumbles and four times on interceptions. By REECE STEIN Chronicle Sports Editor A highly talented flock of Ducks from the University of Oregon scored in each of the last three quarters to defeat the University Uni-versity of Utah 31-14, Saturday night in Ute Stadium. For Utah It was loss number num-ber two against one victory while the Webfeet made It two straight and gained more prestige pres-tige as one of the powers on the West Coast and a good prospect for the Rose Bowl. Oregon's fine all-around signal caller Tom Travato connected on two passes to open the second quarter and broke a scoreless deadlock. It put the Ducks out in front to stay. The Utes had better success with their running attack but after Ken Chelin and Roger Cline were stopped for no gain following fol-lowing the after -TD-kickoff. Quarterback Richard Groth was forced to go to the air. Oregon s Les Palm picked it off on the Utah 39 to set up the second Duck tally. It was one of four interceptions for Oregon. Travoto hit Palm on a 37 yard pass effort that carried the ball to Utah's two. Three plays later fullback Arlan Elms hit off tackle for the sec- . ond score and Oregon led 14-0. Two plays later Oregon dived on a Utah fumble and threatened to make the second period a rout But Utah's line dug in to throw Travoto for two big losses, which, coupled with a 15-yard penalty, forced the Ducks to punt. The Utes were still stymied for an attack and junior Jerry Pullman had to kick and got off but another pass inception on the Oregon 15 stalled the drive for four downs. Lowery hit for one and Groth tagged Butera with a second pass good for 18 yards and a first on the 19. IN THE THIRD period the ball changed hands seven times before Travoto bounced a pass off a Ute defender and into the arms of end Steve Bunker who galloped for a 0-yard TD to give the Webfeet a 21-7 lead.
