Show Poverty War Project Initiates Summer Volunteer Search and crafts for this 5 year old age group; lead musical activities of all kinds; tell or read stories to children; engage children in conversation about everything they do, to strengthen deficient verbal and conceptual skills; drive or accompany individual or small groups of children to medical appointments; explain program to parents and help them use community resources, and act as case aides to help social workers. The program lasts eight weeks and is designed to help children overcome an initial disadvantage so that they can enter public umversity student volunteers to help with Project Headstart, the War on Poverty program for pre-kindergarten children, are needed this summer. Either men or women can be used. More people are needed for morning help five days a week than at other times, but afternoon or early evening help, or help on odd schedules can also be used in a great variety of ways. IN SALT Lake City, the program pro-gram will operate at Jackson and Sumner Schools in the inner city; five Granite, three Jordan, and some Davis County schools are also conducting the program. Work on this program will not begin until after the end of the University quarter, but it is greatly desired that volunteers who can do so sign up at once so plans can be made. If there are those who do not know their summer schedules, they can be used if they can report availability avail-ability anytime before June 21. VOLUNTEERS should report or inquire directly to the Volunteer Volun-teer Bureau, 72 W. 2nd So (phone 355-7585) or to John M. Wade, Campus Christian Center (364-4357), who is helping to arrange ar-range for this service program. Kinds of help needed include: Pick up children at homes and return them at end of kindergarten kinder-garten sessions; take small groups of children on outings and trips around the community; supervise outdoor play activities; participate in indoor creative play situations; supervise arts |
