Show Grant Awarded The National Science Foundation Founda-tion has awarded a University genetics professor a $31,000 research re-search grant to study " the natural relationships in monkey flowers. DR. ROBERT K. Vickery Jr., recipient of the grant says the scientific name of the research is "Evolution and Biosystematics of the Mimulus glabratus complex com-plex (Scrophulariacese)." The grant is for a period of approximately approxi-mately three years, beginning Dec. 1, 1964. Dr. Vickery said the common moneky flowers are bright yellow yel-low and grow by streams and springs throughout the western states, Mexico and Canada, as far north as the Aleutian Islands, Is-lands, and in much of western' South America. They are first cousins of Snapdragons. The researchers hope to determine de-termine the accuracy of their idea on the evolutionary relationships rela-tionships of the Monkey flowers. They suspect the research will reveal new species not previously previous-ly known to science, according to Dr. Vickery. |
