Show Huarte Takes Heisman Trophy "Fortunately, they didn't operate," oper-ate," said Parseghian, "and the shoulder came around." By BOB HOOBING Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK John Huarte, the Notre Dame quarterback whose deft skills converted a two-game winner into the apparent national na-tional champion in one year, was named the Heisman Trophy winner win-ner as college football's outstanding out-standing player of 1964 Tuesday. The Anaheim, Calif., senior overcame a history of injuries to take command of the unbeaten unbeat-en Irish and edge Tulsa quarterback quarter-back Jerry Rhome in an extreme ly close vote. Huarte finished with 1,026 points to Rhome's 952. Illinois center-linebacker Dick Butkus compiled 505 points for third. The 180-pounder played virtually virtu-ally no time as a sophomore due to injuries and failed to win a monogram again last year when he was able to get in only 45 minutes of game action. Parseghian Parse-ghian liked what he saw in film clips, installed Huarte as his regular reg-ular in spring drills then saw his key man suffer a shoulder injury. |
