Show Rumors Place Bennion In Governor's Race Dr. Lowell L. Bennion, assistant dean of students, is being drafted for the Utah gubernatorial race by a group of University Democrats. The University-based movement has grown into an enthusiastic effort ef-fort to put Dr. Bennion on the November No-vember ballot. FIRST WORD of the possibility came last week when Dr. J. D. Williams, associate professor of political science, appeared on KSL Radio's "Public Pulse." Dr. Williams Willi-ams said at that time that he felt Dean Bennion could be Utah's next governor. (He also predicted that Pres. Johnson would carry Utah with about a 53 majority.) In a Chronicle interview, Dr. Williams Wil-liams said that though "practical politicians" may not accept Dr. Bennion as a serious contender, there is "some evidence especially especial-ly in Utah that a soft-spoken man, such as Dr. Bennion, with no 'skeletons 'skel-etons in his closet,' who is dignified digni-fied and has a good name in the state, just might be able to win even as Eisenhower did." DR BENNION, who has been with the University since 1962, was formerly head of the LDS Institute of Religion at the University. He acknowledged receiving several sev-eral informal phone calls, but said that he would rather not comment. Tf Dr. Bennion should decide to become a candidate, he would of course have to quit his post at the University. There has been some speculation that he will make a formal announcement sometime next week. |
