Utah Painters Asked, 'Who Can Judge Art ?' By SANDA TELFORD Chronicle Staff Writer Can students appreciate art? According Ac-cording to Earl Jones, Dennis Phillips Phil-lips and Anthony Smith, three artists ar-tists who are exhibiting their paintings paint-ings in the Union Building Jan. 8-31, 8-31, "the comprehension of any student stu-dent is relevant to the student's perception both educationally and intuitively." Anthony Smith, who specializes in painting ' historical incidents, feels that a student can't appreciate paintings unless he has more than Dennis Phillips, an impression-alist impression-alist landscape artist, went on to say that students today cannot appreciate art as valued during the Renaissance. The painting then was "representative of something for public consumation." Mr. Phillips believes art today is more difficult to estimate justly. It has to be enjoyed by its basic "primaries": color and design. TO EARL JONES, who paints heroic figures, the student can not perceive the worth of paintings but "there are signs that he is beginning be-ginning to try." Earl Jones believes that art "explores "ex-plores the meaning of men and ex-istance ex-istance through the painted image. It is to discover that the brave and the frightful, the vulnerable and the divine can be embodied in the same image." Anthony Smith is "deeply concerned with the particular particu-lar .. . the last name. My concern average education. To him this means that if the student knows little of history or literature, even if he has studied art, he is incapable incap-able of appreciating paintings. However, Mr. Smith states, "There is no reason why he should not be able to find something some-thing in the picture." does not lies in the cowardice or frustration of a Lee Harvey Oswald but rather with what he had for breakfast." THE THREE ARTISTS graduated from the University. Mr. Jones is now lecturing at the university, Mr. Smith is the graduate assistant at the Institute of Art and Mr. Phillips Phil-lips has just concluded an exhibition exhibi-tion in San Francisco.
