Show Military Services Held Tuesday for lorn Martin Funeral services were conducted con-ducted Tuesday, Dec. 27, in the Milford L D S Chapel for Ca-tondcr Ca-tondcr Thomas Martin, 8S, who died at .-!:15 a. m. Friday, Dec. 23, of causes incident to age. Full military honors were provided by Milford American Legion Post N. 16. Mr. Martin was born Feb. 6, 1869, at Ripley, Brown County, Illinois, a son of Gaylord W. and Minerva Ford Martin. On July 1, 1902, he married Jennie Odell at the old ghost town of Frisco, Utah. Mr. Martin was until his retirement, re-tirement, very active in Milford civic affairs. He served for sev-eal sev-eal years on the Milford Town Board, was city judge 'for two years, and served as postmaster from 1922 to 1933. He helped organize the original orig-inal Milford Volunteer Fire Department De-partment and served as a member mem-ber of the department during his active years. He served in the Spanish-American Spanish-American War, and was a member mem-ber of Wedgewood Camp No. 1, Salt Lake City, and of Milford Post No. 16, American Legion. He was also a life member of Milford Lodge No 42, I O O F. Mr. Martin worked in Milford as a miner, farmer, 'business man, and postmaster. He brought the first two-cylinder automobile into Milford, Mil-ford, and operated the first local roller skating rink. He planted the first grass lawn here at Martin Terrace, which he built of cement block, manufacturing manufac-turing the block himself. "Tom" also drove the first automobile auto-mobile into Zion Canyon, at the time of the original opening of the park. He was one of the original pioneers pio-neers of the Milford Valley farming farm-ing area, purchasing land 'from the old Delta Land and Water Company, Com-pany, and helped to install the first surface irrigation system. While serving as sewer and water wat-er commissioner for Milford, he directed installation of the first sewer and sidewalk systems of the town. Funeral services, under direction of. Second Ward Bishop Gael Elmer, El-mer, were as follows: Music, Mrs. Dora Pool. Prayer, Rev. Lillian Nelson, of the Methodist Church. Vocal solo, Gael Elmer. Remarks, Rue Nielsen and L. A. Wyn aught. Duet, Mrs. Dora Pool and Mrs. Emma Griffiths, accompanied by Mrs. Ruth McWhorter. Benediction, Mrs. Vena Wilson. Graveside services were under direction of the Milford Lodge No. 42, I O O F, with the American Legion Firing Squad firing the final salute over the grave. Palllbearers were M. H. Pool, Carl Elmer. Joe Elliott. Jack Bards-ley. Bards-ley. L. A. Wynaught, A. F. Drake of Midway City, Calif. Survivors, besides the widow, include in-clude two sons, Robert R. Martin of Houston, Texas, and Gaylord C. Martin of Salt Lake City; five grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. great-grandchildren. From out of town, attending the services, were A. F. Drake of California; Cali-fornia; Mrs. Gertrude English and two sons, and Mrs. Wilma Cannon of Salt Lake City; Jerry Martin and Mrs. Gaylord Martin of Salt Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Barton of Beaver, and Joe Eyre and Mrs. Hazel Eyre. |
