Show Tigers Lose Thriller to Dixie in Stubborn Battle A victory-hungry bunch of, Tigers took the field against Dixie last Friday evening, and came close to racking up their first win. Fans were impressed with the determination of the "new"' Tigers, who showed winning spirit in their running, tackling, blocking and line bucking and they did it all the way, not just for the first half. They were outs cored in the last half, but they were not outplayed. Dixie worked one line-buck play for four of their five touchdowns, and had the linemen or line backers solved that one, the local lads would have had a two- or three-touchdown win. A penalty for illegal il-legal use of hands moved the ball back to the 31, and a pass try was incomplete. Dixie kicked to the Milford 34. Vee went around right end to the 40, then Wise fumbled and Dixie recovered on the Milford Mil-ford 45. j The visitors picked up a yard around left end, then on the same play went for a first down on the 34. They made 5 over left tackle, and lacked a foot of making a first down on a center smash. On a pitchout, the ball carrier went to the 2-yard 2-yard line, where White forced him out of bounds. On the next play Dixie fumbled and Ron Banks recovered for Milford, Mil-ford, snuggling the ball under his chest a few inches from the goal line. Wade made a foot at left end, and Vee kicked to the 30, but the ball was returned to the 13. On the first play a hole was opened at the left guard slot and Dixie had their first touchdown. The conversion was good: Dixie 7, Milford 0. Wade took the kick on the 20 and returned to the 35. Boyd went around left end to the 45 as the quarter ended. Vee fumbled the pass from center and Dixie recovered on the 47. They failed to gain on a line buck and a 5-yard offside penalty pen-alty made it first and 15. An end run was good for 10 yards, then the visitors were penalized 5 for delaying the game. Dave Bown and Bill Grififths wesi through to snag the ball carrier for a 10-yard loss. Dixie kicked to White on the 20, and with beautiful blocking where it was needed Boyd went 80 yards far a T-D. On a fake kick and run, Vee failed to get over. Score: Dixie 7, Milford 6. Wadsworth stopped the kick return on the Dixie 47 when it looked like the ball carrier was gone for the goal. On the next play, Dixie -went through the center-guard slot for a touchdown. touch-down. Vee kicked to the Dixie 15 and the ball was returned to Milford's 35, but nullified on a 15-yard penalty for roughing the kicker. That made it first and 10 for Milford and after Wade failed to gain on an end run Vee tossed a short over the line pass to Gale Anderson who went all the way thru the Dixie backfield. Vee kicked the point and it was 13-13. Vee kicked into the end zone for a touchback. After two incomplete passes, Dixie hit the line for 2, then kick to Boyd on the 8. He returned to the 22. White took the ball from Boyd on a lateral anrt went all the way, 78 yards, for Milford's third touchdown. The kick for extra point was wide and the score was Milford 19, Dixie 13. Vee again kicked into the end zone and Dixie put the ball in I play on their own 20. Another pitchout lost 4. They kicked to Dixie and Gale Anderson made a shoestring tackle to stop the weaving ball carrier on the Dixie 40. A center plunge was good for 2, then the same play netted 5. On a' fake handoff and short pass, then long pass to a Dixie end on the 35, the end went over for the T-D. The kick was wide and the score: Dixie 25, Milford 19. Boyd took the kick on the 20 and lateraled to Vee who made it to the 25. Wade was trapped but outran the tacklers and picked up 17 to the 42. Vee on a pitchout went around right end to the 50. Boyd cut wide around left end but only made a yard. He went thru center for a first and 10 on the Dixie 44. An over the line pass was almost intercepted. Vee hit right guard for 5. Wadsworth passed to Wise on the 20 and Neil went on to the 9. Vee hit center for 4, then picked up 2 more around right end. Boyd lost 5 on an end sweep and Vee went thru tackle for 4, but the ball went over on downs. An offside penalty took the ball back to the 1: The Tiger line held and the ball was set down on the 1-foot mark. The same line plunge was called, and it worked again with the ball carrier swiveling through the secondary and all the way, 99 yards, for a touchdown. They bucked the ball over for the conversion. A pass, Vee to Boyd, was completed on the 30 and Boyd went on to the 5. Vee lost a half-yard on an end run. A fake handoff lost a yard. Vee Went thru center to the 1-foot line. The ball was put in play while the referee was advising coaches of the four-minute time, and Vee went over, but the play was not allowed. Boyd ram-rodded ram-rodded through for the T-D, standing up and driving. The kick for extra point was just under the crossbar. Score: Dixie 32, Milford 25. Wadsworth tried an ' on-side kick but it failed to work and Dixie returned the ball to the 45. They picked up 4V2, then IV2 for a first down on the Milford Mil-ford 44. They made 5, 5, and 4 on successive plays, but with the clock running out they were taking as much time as possible to protect their lead, and twice were penalized for delaying the game.
