About the most thrilling race of the meet was the match race between High Kisses and Little Smack, with The Smacker coming from behind be-hind to win the race in the last few strides at odds of 3 to' 1. Of course there was no pari-mutual pari-mutual betting, and no open booking, but the wagering was as wide open as it could be, and anyone who ddn't get a bet down just didn't want to bet. Every day in many towns in Utah some patriotic, church or civic organization operates a lottery. How much better it would be if we could do away with sanctimonious hypocrisy and permit these small county race meets to operate mutuals, legally, with a portion of the profits going into state tax coffers cof-fers and enough left over to assure, the non-profit organizations organiza-tions who operate the meets, of at least paying expenses. We think the horsemen of the state should get the ball rolling now so the voters of the state will have the opportunity ,at the 1952 elections, of saying they do or don't want legal betting bet-ting at horse races. |
