Show , "JOE" SERVED AS RED CROSS CHAIRMAN FOR TWENTY YEARS Joe C. Smith, chairman of the Milford Chapter of the American Amer-ican Red Cross for the past 20 years, resigned his position at the anuual workers' meeting last Friday, June 8th. Otto C. Koch, Milford justice of the peace and long-time local resident, was appointed to succeed Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith has served faithfully faith-fully and well since his first election to office on May 30, 1929. Under his leadership the local chapter maintained its charter and remained an active, influential organization when other chapters were "falling by the wayside" and allowing their charters to lapse. Mr. Smith directed di-rected flood relief when the city suffered a serious flood; war fund drives, the regular service work to indigents and local persons per-sons in need of assistance, and directed an active, helpful serv-ive serv-ive to war veterans and their families. He was in charge of the distribution of the first government gov-ernment relief funds about 1933 when the Red Cross conducted distribution of the major portion por-tion of the federal relief funds. Since coming to Milford about 1904, he has served in many prominent official positions, including in-cluding several years as a school teacher, a member of the Board of Education for about 18 years, the last several years of which he has served as president of the board; cashier of the Milford , State Bank, a member of the Milford Town Board, President of the Milford Lions Club, president pres-ident of the Southern Utah Bankers' Association, and various vari-ous other official positions. Mr. O. C. Koch, who succeeds Mr. Smith as chairman, was for many years local manager for, the Telluride Power Co. Since suffering an accident a few years ago Mr. Koch has retired from strenuous work, and is at present Milford justice of the peace. In 1943 and 1947 Mr. Koch was fund drive director for the Red Cross. The 1943 drive was the largest and most successful in the history of the Milford chapter. Mrs. Susan Glenn was award-e, award-e, da 30-year pin, in recognition of her 30 years of continuous service with the Milford chap-. chap-. ter. Mrs. Glenn is a charter member of the local group, having hav-ing been appointed to the board of directors at the, organization meeting in 1918. Since that time she has served as vice-president, and as secretary-treasurer since 1924. Mrs. Glenn was a member mem-ber of the nominating committee which first nominate dMr. Smith for the chairmanship, She has been one o fthe chapter's most active and willing workers, |
