Show New Copper Refining Will Broaden Utah's Industrial Front I l'imshed copper will be made at plant lo be built near Kennecott's mills and power i plant on south shore of Great Salt Lake. Utahns welcomed the announcement announce-ment recently of the construction of the state's first copper relinery near Garfield by Kennecott Copper Corporation. Ground will be broken in .the near future for the plant which will open a new and far-reaching" far-reaching" front on Utah's expanding expand-ing industrial horizon. New fabricating industries will have the inducement to locate in the state and the plant will add materially ma-terially to the company's own payroll pay-roll in Utah which is now elose to $13,000,000 yearly. The refinery will have an initial capacity of 12,000 tons of refined copper monthly, using more than one half of the present output of Kennecott's Utah Copper division. divi-sion. Exact cost has not been determined, but it will mean that millions of dollars invested in i the refinery and subsequent construction con-struction will be diverted to Utah's economy. Governor Herbert B. M a w greeted the announcement with the following statement: "1 am enthusiastic en-thusiastic over the announcement because of the extra employment . it will furnish and the tremendous i inducement to other concerns using us-ing copper to establish plants in . Utah." In taking copper ore through the final step means that Utah will realize full benefit of her natural resource. The mining, nilling and smelting smelt-ing of the Bingham production has . been one of Utah's major industries indus-tries for the past 40 years. The mine is one of the world's largest and produces about one third of the nation's oLnmit. Ore dug from the huge open-cut mine is hauled by railroad to Magna and Arthur where it is milled. Concentrate from the mills is then smelted at AS&R smeller at Garfield. Heretofore Here-tofore blister copper from the smelter was shipped to Baltimore Maryland; Perth Aniboy, New - ' Jersey and Tacoma, Washington, for refining. .. |
