Show High lakes now checked for fish survival Snowmobiles are being used by fishery biologists this winter to get Into lakes and reservoirs innccessable to allow biologists to check on potential fish kills due to low oxygen levels in the water. Sheep Creek Lake in Daggett. County is one of the lakes where oxygen level checks have been made by biologists of the Division of Fish and Game. Sheep Creek Lake is important import-ant because of the millions of Cutthroat Trout eggs taken there from spawning fish each spring. A loss of fish could mean changes would have to be made in the fish planting plans for the summer. Similar tests are being conducted con-ducted on other lakes or reservoirs reser-voirs which may be suffering from low oxygen levels and an early report would allow the Fish and Game to make plans for restocking the lake or at least warning the anglers of the loss. In most cases, even though low oxygen levels are detected, little can be done to stop a fish loss. Pumping oxygen into the water or putting coal dust on the ice and snow cover to hasten has-ten its melting are usually futile fu-tile efforts. Early warning is of benefit even though chances are slim, because some way may be found to reduce the loss and save some fish for the angler. |
