He explained that the proposed program justifies itself to Nebo's children, that because of it these children can be better citizens, better educated, edu-cated, better equipped for life. Dr. Helmut Hoffman, professor pro-fessor at Utah State University, Univer-sity, discussed problems of the educationally deprived children. He noted that the new program pro-gram cannot succeeed "if you rely entirely upon specialists it can succeed only if each teacher strongly cooperates." He gave a charge to the teachers tea-chers to pay more attention to the development of language. He mentioned that language skills have never been as important im-portant as they are today. Dr. Hoffman then explained some of the characteristics of the culturally deprived child, and said that no man is an island, that we all need one another, and that some of these children need to be brought in from their "islands" and made to feel worthwhile. Mrs. Dela McClellan, primary supervisor, read a letter written writ-ten by Phillip Argyle explaining explain-ing the new District Materials Center. Carl Wilson explained the role of the Teaching Specialist, Spec-ialist, and Rulon Thomas discussed dis-cussed the Elementary Guidance Guid-ance and Special Education and the Social Worker and Emotionally Disturbed phases of the program. The Special Reading Program was presented present-ed by Mrs. LaDore Goodsell, and Ralph Snelson explained the Special Math Program. Music for the conference was presented by the Springville Spring-ville High School Orchestra, under the direction of Harmon Hatch, and Stanley Burning-ham Burning-ham sang a vocal solo. |
