WBBA tournament opens Friday; Pony League regional meet gets underway on Auaust II Hobble Creek will be the lone WBBA all-star team in the Regional Tounrament from S Springville and will be com-f'jfpetng com-f'jfpetng against the top area winners from American Fork, to the north. Spanish Fork won over Heber to give them another an-other try against the Provo club. Provo downed Spanish the following day in a close 5-4 contest. Stewart Hamilton pitched the entire game for Springville against the Provo team the final day of the meet as the local club came up with an 11-4 victory which gave them the championship. Provo moved into the Price district meet to compete for the title there and moved back to Springville for the opening of the regional tourney Wednesday. Bountiful and Brigham City. These meets were concluded last week. Hobble Creek won the American Amer-ican Fork Tournament while Tooele took the Springvlle meet. Two other winners will join these teams in the Springville Spring-ville meet which gets underway under-way Friday and Saturday, August Au-gust 6 and 7, at the Hobble Creek Diamond on Memorial Park. Winners of the Springville tournament will enter the Western Wes-tern Finals at American Fork beginning August 17. This tournament has previously been held in California. Pony tourney Play will open Wednesday, August 11 in the Regional Pony League tournament at Memorial ball park with four teams entered in the meet. Springville will be in the meet as a seeded team and will compete com-pete with the winner of the Price district tournament and two other winners of district tournaments. Jack Windley is in charge of the big meet here. Games will begin at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p,m, each night. The tournament tourna-ment is a double elimination event. Tuesday night a banquet will be held in Memorial Hall for all players and managers and officials to start out the tournament week. Springville wins Though seeded in the meet, the Springville all-star Pony players came through the area tournament last week with flying colors, winning every tournament game. Paul Wheeler Wheel-er and Allan Lynn pitched the local team to a smashing 22-0 victory over Heber in the opening op-ening game. The game was called after the fifth inning. Provo beat Spanish Fork 6-1 in the other first day contest. Springville's same duo were on the mound against Provo in the second tourney game Wednesday Wed-nesday and led the team in its 14-7 defeat of their neighbors |
