Show Enoch mayor states opposition to jail CEDAR CITY Not everyone is happy with the proposed hall of justice. Enoch Mayor Worth Grimshaw last week expressed extreme opposition to the building of the facility. "I'm not sure we need a new jail. Everyone should spend a night there (in the old facility) before deciding to build one that costs $4 million," he said. He went on to say, "if I would have received that good of treatment, as I did the night that I spent there, I probably never would have gotten divorced." Grimshaw explained that in his opinion, a jail was not a comfortable living facility and should not be treated as such. "It should be livable, but not better than what the person would receive on the outside." he said. He also added that hi .a not in favor of punishing prisoners beyond human endurance. But if a person has done something wrong, they should expect to pay their debt. Grimshaw went on to say that he was not willing to pay tax money to build a $4 million facility when the old one is fine in his opinion. Grimshaw does believe that we need a new courtroom and that the building could be upgraded in some ways. "I spent a lot worse night in my life than the night I spent in the jail, and I'll probably spend a lot more," he said concerning his recent bout with the law. "The jailors were extremely courteous and besides knowing that I couldn't leave whei.c-ver I wanted to it wasn't a bad experience at all." Commissioner James Clark extremely opposed Grimshaw's views. Clark tried to explain to Grimshaw that the jail was in irrepairable condition and that they as public officials had certain obligations to the people of this County, one of them being protection, which the jail presently cannot quarantee. |
