Show The Air Force released the DEE on MX deploy- . ment area selection and land withdrawalacquisition.Thls environmental impact analysis analy-sis process is being conducted conduct-ed in cooperation with the BLM as this EIS could be used as part of an application applica-tion for withdrawing public land for Air Force use. MX Is a new, survivable intercontinental ballistic missile system being developed de-veloped by the Air Force to help upgrade the nation's strategic nuclear forces. The MX system is planned to be composed of 200 mis-silles mis-silles spread throughout 4,600 shelters and is expected expect-ed to be fully operational by the end of 1989. This DEIS, the third in a series of MX environmental impact statements, discusses discus-ses environmental considerations consider-ations to be used in deciding decid-ing where the MX will be deployed. The statement is organized into five chapters; 1. Program Overview 2. Comparative Analysis of Alternatives 3. Affected Environment 4. Environmental Consequences Conse-quences to the Study Regions and Operating Base Vicinities Vi-cinities 5. Appendices The statement contains an environmental impact analysis analy-sis for the most promising deployment area, the Great Basin area of Nevada and Utah, and an alternative deployment de-ployment area - western TexasNew Mexico. Split basing between NevadaUtah and TexasNew Mexico is also analyzed. The analysis analy-sis includes the consequences consequen-ces associated with con- struction of the 4,600 shelters, shel-ters, operating bases, area support centers and the interconnecting in-terconnecting road network. The Air Force solicits public review and comment on this DES. The public comment period will begin January 2, 1981 and extend for 90 days. Duringthis period per-iod the Air Force will conduct con-duct public hearings in these states to explain the DEIS, and solicit comment. A final decision on MX deployment areas will not be made until after a final EIS incorporating public com -ments and Air Force Responses Res-ponses has been published. The deployment area decision decis-ion is not expected before the summer of 1981.
