Air Force plans to deploy 200 MX intercontinental intercon-tinental ballistic missiles in the southwestern United States by the end of this decade. dec-ade. Because of the potential poten-tial effects on the environment environ-ment due to the construction and operation of the MX system, sys-tem, a federal law requires that the Air Force prepare an Environmental Impact I Statement. The EE is the first step in providing decision makers with a basis for considering the effects among several ' basing areas. It will answer such questions as: How will the MX affect the environment? environ-ment? What is the present environment like? What scientific sci-entific factors were used in judging the alternatives? Release of the draft environmental en-vironmental impact statement state-ment on MX deployment area selection, scheduled for mid July, has been delayed until later this summer. Following the review and comment period, the Final EE will be prepared. It will incorporate and respond to the comments received during dur-ing the review period. This will be submitted to the EPA later this year. Copies will be provided to Congress, and to the general public on request. The Air Force will not take any irreversible actions until at least 30 days after the final statement is filed. Final decisions will require both Congressional and Presidential approval. Two environmental impact statements have already been completed by the Air Force. The first was filed in January 1978, the second In October 1978. Later, another EE will be prepared. This statement state-ment will contain Information Informa-tion not presently available such as more refined details about the actual system to be deployed. This EE will be made available to the public pub-lic in both draft and final ' . r versions. Soliciting public comment is a cornerstone in the overall over-all environmental review process. The Air Force can thus design the MX system to minimize adverse effects on the environment. The Air Force's MX Project Pro-ject Office in Washington, DC will continue to provide updates on the draft statement. |
