Show Just Between Ycu And th "Red" Wilson Arlene Malchus Is mad! She's the meter reader at Utah Power &. Light. She took exception to 'Between's' note last week that the main topic of conversation was everybody's heat bill. Evidently Evi-dently she thinks everyone is heating with electricity. She notes that the Novem -ber billing was 33 days, that November was the coldest in 15 years, and so on. Be that as it may, Arlene, that doesn't change the fact that most heat bills doubled or more over the October bills, and as we stated, it really hasn't got cold yet. And It doesn't change the fact that the cost of heating, whether with electricity, oil or coal Is almost double last year. - We may admire your loyalty to your job, but It won't cut much mustard to those of us that don't get big annual cost of living raises. When you've got to dig down for another $50. a month to keep warm, that is $50. you don't have for food and other necessities. You'd better confine your arguments to bending the editor's ear, cause if you take your soapbox onto the street, you could get mob- be heading back to Salt Lake City soon for the bi-annual budget session. They will fiddle around with everything but the budget until the last day and then have to stop the clock to get it passed. Governor Matheson will present the largest budget in Utah's history and he calls it austere. . Boy, once they start spending tax dollars they don't know the meaning of austere. Our own Senator Matheson Mathe-son has prefiled a bill for Utah to joUTthe" Sage brush" rebellion. Where has he been? Most Utahns were in on the ground floor of the Sagebrush Rebellion. In fact, PLUC, organized right here in Milford, was a leader in getting the rebellion moving. 0 - And have you noticed the lack of ingenuity on T-V this season. About two thirds of the shows are spin offs of the other third. Isn't a half hour of "Mork and Mindy" enough without them guest starring all over the network? net-work? And there's been a dirge of 'The Best OF' shows, which had few highlights during their short seasons. - 0 - bed. 0 -How come everytime the energy producers start crying cry-ing poverty, and telling us we have to conserve even more, we get the feeling we're listening to the little lit-tle beggar, who laughs all the way to the bank. 0 - Well, the football season is finally over, at least for all but the Superbowl. We ! can't wait.. The seasons last too long. But then, what doesn't. The legislature will only be in recess about five weeks before they head back to Washington. . Fifty years ago, they could do enough damage in a couple of months and then go home to give the constituents a rest. Now it takes longer than that for them to settle down to work after they get back. Of course, we might be better bet-ter off if they recessed before be-fore they got down to work. - 0 - And the Utah Solons will And President Carter can take a lesson from the Soviets So-viets on how to 'walk softly and carry a big stick.' If you expect Iran or any other country to respect the stick, they've got to know you're not scared to use it. Russia moved into Afghanistan Afghani-stan with i:'tle more than an eyebrow raised. The Carter Administration couldn't even put a limited economic blockade on Iran. So he called call-ed it off when the United Nations Na-tions wouldn't do it for him. But the Ayotolla gets his fist waving mob on nationwide nation-wide TV daily, and uses the brainwashed hostages to read his propaganda. It's no wonder the nation and the world wonder if there is something Carter isn't telling tell-ing us. 0 - Well, we are into the '80's and though there are no new revelations to put a new light on the problems of the '7Q's, there is still hope that we can get our act together. to-gether. Most people are optimistic that the '80's will bring a turnaround. That we will solve our problems on the national and international level. In today's culture, we too often look to the bureaucratic society and our elected officials for the ans -wers. Too often their answers only complicate and make things worse. We hope the '80's will see more citizen Involvement at all levels. We must take a positive attitude toward solving our problems, and moving toward a better life. We can no longer look to Washington or Salt Lake for the answers. We must be constructive, and insistent, if we are to wake them to positive solutions. |
