Show Sec. Ilathanay, Son. Garn discuss ID reorganization In response to an invitation invita-tion from U.S. Sen. Jake Garn (R-Ut.), Interior Secretary Stan Hathaway today met with Garn in the Senator's office "to discuss matters of concern con-cern to Utahns". Senator Garn and Secretary Secre-tary Hathaway discussed the proposed reorganization of the Bureau of Land Management Manage-ment in Utah, the CentralUt. Project and efforts of some "dissident" Indians to stall it, and the Kaiparowitz power pow-er project. "B L M officials haven't demonstrated to me that their proposed reorganization reorganiza-tion will better serve the people or save the taxpayers money," Senator Garn told the Secretary. "The feedback feed-back I have had from local government officials in the affected areas of the state is that they feel Ignored and betrayed. be-trayed. The BLM has failed fail-ed to convince the vast majority ma-jority of the people that it will serve them better but they appear to be going ahead with it anyway. I would like to see it stopped or significantly modified. Administrative convenience is not a sufficient suf-ficient reason to proceed with the reorganization." Secretary Hathaway told the Senator that if the Interior In-terior Department can accomodate Garn's concerns without seriously hurting effective ef-fective management of the BLM, he will see that it is done. Senator Garn also told Hathaway of his displeasure at the recent successful effort ef-fort of "a few dissident Indians In-dians to get the Bureau of Indian Affairs to recommend delays in opening bids for construction on parts of the Central Utah Project, when virtually every elected official offi-cial involved favors having it move ahead as rapidly as possible." Hathaway responded by telling the Senator that he knows of the value of the C.U.P. and that he appreciated apprecia-ted his frustration with the BIA. "I will do my best to keep the Central Utah Project moving," Hathaway said. Secretary Hathaway also said that he knows of the importance im-portance of the Kaiparowitz powr project and that he will encourage its construction. "I am pleased that the Secretary Sec-retary would take the time to come to my office for only a few days," Senator Garn said. "He was very responsive respon-sive and seemed sympathetic sympathet-ic to the problems we're having. |
