Show Road Commission Makes 55MPH Speed Permanent The State Road Commission Commis-sion of Utah, meeting today In Salt Lake City, gave final approval to a resolution establishing es-tablishing 55 mph as the permanent per-manent maximum speed limit lim-it in Utah. Assistant Attorney General Gener-al Mark Madsen told the Commission that the real issue is not whether the state wants to adopt 55 mph as the speed limit, but whether the . state wants to participate in the Federal Aid Highway Program. Secretary of Transportation William T. Coleman, Jr., has informed the states that they must have "certified" 55 mph maximum maxi-mum speed limit that is vigorously vig-orously enforced, or lose their federal highway funds. The Commission approved the resolution by a four -to-one vote, with only Commissioner Commis-sioner Clem Church of Pan-guitch Pan-guitch objecting. Commissioner Commis-sioner Church said he could not, In good conscience, vote for a 55 mph limit when the Commission is approving the construction of highwaysde-signed highwaysde-signed for 80 mph. |
