Show BEAVER COUNTY COURTHOUSE IS HISTORICAL SITE Mr. Milton L. Weilenmann, ftate Liaison Oficor, announces that Utah ha-, been henord with seven new sites bMng listed on the National Register of Historic Histor-ic Places: 1. Beaver County Courthouse: Built in 187-3. if became the seat of the Sond Judicial District of Utah Territory. The three-ftoricd three-ftoricd structure is an outstanding outstand-ing example of architecture in public buildings of Utah and is1 still used by Beaver County. 2. Cove Fort: Built in 1867 by Mormons during the Bla?k Hawk War as a defense against till e Indians and to protect pro-tect the newly established telegraph tele-graph line. Although the south wall deteriorated, it is now owned and has been restored by the Alice T. Kcsler family, rillmore.. S. Fort Deseret: Built in June of 1866 by Mormon settlers in Deseret as protection from the Indians during the unrest of the Black Hawk War. Never used against the Indians, but its mud-adobe walls afforded good protection and its 550' square was ample space to corral stock when the Indian raids threatened. threat-ened. Most of the 10' walls have fallen down. The corners, two bastions, and most of the east wall still remain. 4. Territorial Capitol in Fillmore: Fill-more: Built in 1854- 55, as designed de-signed by Truman Angel. Used by the Legislature in 1855, 1856 and 1858. Purchased by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers but now owned and being restored by Utah State Parks and Rec-leation. Rec-leation. 5. St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral. Cath-edral. Salt Lake City. 6. Cast Iron Front of Z.C.M.I. in Salt Lake City. 7. Old Washington County Courthouse in St. George. This new status will bring these sites National attention and protection. The State is now anxious to proceed with their preservation and protection. protec-tion. All are a part of Utah's Historic Preservation Plan. Both the Old Washington County Courthouse and Fort Deseret are eligible for matching Federal Feder-al funds for fiscal 1971. As of this date the amount of preservation preser-vation monies for Utah has not been determined, although $270,000 have been applied for.
