Show 9 jbtuttto, Bid 0 Jfeaid By STEVE WILLIAMS In another column on this page are a few comments from local residents concerning the Milford Industrial Development Foundation and the Foundation's Founda-tion's effort? to "pull Milford up by its bootstraps." We urge our readers to give serious thought to the opinions of these civic and business leaders, and to ask themselves, "Just what is Milford's future, what does Milford's future depend de-pend upon, and how can I fit into a program of improvement?" improve-ment?" This week the students of Milford High School have made a city-wide survey, seeking opinions of individuals as to how to improve our community. Next week, Feb. 16-20, the Foundation will make a concerted con-certed drive for memberships. Sustaining memberships are $50; associate membership are $10, $20, or whatever an individual feels he can afford to invest in our future. Persons wishing to be sustaining members, but unable un-able to "spare" $50 at a whack, may sign up for sustaining membership and pay the $50 in monthly or weekly installments. We join Milford's civic and business leaders in urging each and every individual in Milford to sign up as a sustaining sus-taining or associate member. On Wednesday, March 11, Governor Rampton, officials of the AT&T and State Industrial Development officials will be in Milford to survey our efforts, ef-forts, give advice on consolidating consoli-dating those efforts and carrying carry-ing out our "Bootstrap" program, pro-gram, and offer any and every assistance they can. A pat on the back to Dave Jones . . . last week he was named 'Playmaker of the Week' in the casaba wars by Radio Station KUTV, Salt Lake. It's? the Playmakers that are responsible re-sponsible for the 2-pointers the leading scorers get. Congratulations Congratu-lations to Dave. We think Jimmie Mayer has the right idea. Burn off all your old, unsightly and unserviceable unser-viceable barns and buildings (on The Flat that is) and save money when it comes tax-paying time . . and ALSO, get the jump on the annual spring clean-up campaign. Last Monday, after notifying Fire Chief Ray Whiting of his intentions, Mr. Mayer set fire to the Old Clair Gillins house, situated on land he had purchased. pur-chased. Some neighbor saw the flames, made a phone call, and the Fire Laddies responded but were stopped by Chief Whiting before they headed for The Flat. We understand burning the house, and previously an old barn that was on the tax rolls as a "Class A Dairy Barn," will save Mr. Mayer a few hundred hun-dred bucks each year in taxes that have been paid on the past-their-prime buildings. Dunno what's with our new County Superintendent, pushing push-ing so hard for a $100,000 building build-ing to house a vocational educational edu-cational school at Beaver. We recall that our Norman Lamb has been trying for several Continued on Back Page HERE'S MORE ABOUT I DUNNO Continued from Page One years to get a Voc Ed school at Milford, but there was no interest on the part of the Bd of Ed until the school was proposed pro-posed for Beaver. We think Milford area residents resi-dents and school patrons oughta start attending Board of Ed meetings. Norm and Karl Truman Tru-man are sorta getting "beat down." It is proposed, by the Beaver Beav-er Bd of Ed members and the County Superintendent, that a $100,000 bulding be constructed at Beaver to house a Voc Ed installation. in-stallation. Why? Seems to us, that with forced consolidation of smaller schools more imminent immi-nent than most folks realize, it would be much more feasible, feas-ible, much more sensible, to delay any and all expensive school construction until we, the guys who are going to have to pay the bills, know what's gonna happen on consolidation, and if consolidation (which no one in Beaver County wants) is made mandatory, where will the consolidated school be con- structed. If school consolidation is forced upon Beaver County, the only logical place to build the consolidated high school would be in the vicinity of Minersville. If a consolidated school is constructed at Minersville, Min-ersville, that's where the Voc Ed school should be. We feel the Board of Education Educa-tion should use a little restraint, a little common sense, and not be stampeded into something impractical by an over-zealous county superintendent and a few area-minded board of education ed-ucation members. We understand a decision on the Voc Ed school will be sought at the March meeting of the Board of Ed. It is the opinion opin-ion of The Beaver County News that any decision of the Bd of Ed, or any other public body, involving expenditure of substantial sums of money, and especially when such expenditure ex-penditure would benefit one tax-paying community at the expense of another tax-paying community, should be made only after public announcement I and public hearing. |
