Charles ft. Cox, president of Kennecott. and Fred J. Emmeri-ch, president of Allied Chemical indii-ate- that plans for the new metal company call for an initial investment of $40,000,000 and further expansion as industry 'demands develop. They stated that the new company would be Kiuall-- ' owned by the parent cor-porations. A plant will be constructed at a site to be announced shortly. Production of titanium tetrachlo-ride, titanium sponge and titan-ium billets is expected to start late in 195U. The new venture will make it possible to utilize the comple-mentary technological resources and experience of the parent companies in chemical process-ing and metal fabricating. A new continuous process developed by Allied Chemical's Solvay Process Division will be employed in which sodium is used to reduce titanium tetrachloride to titan-ium sponge. Allied Chemical has also developed an improved pro-cess for the manufacture of titan-ium tetrachloride which permits the use of titanium slag as the raw material. Kennecott's subsidiar" Chase Brass & Copper Co., Inc., has developed processes for melting and fabricating titanium and these will be employed in the new operation. The rew company is expected to undertake further pilot plant work and market de-velopment of an iodide process for the production of titanium with soecial properties. Titanium, sometimes called the "wonder metal of the jet age" is three times as strong as alu-minum and 45 per cent lighter than steel. Its high weight ratio at temperatures up to UOi) degrees fahrenheit will make it an Important meUl for commercial airplanes. In aircraft of the future, as much as 75 per cent of air frame weight may be fabricated from, titanium. The metal is also expected to play an important role in military air-- , craft and in the long-rang- e guid-;e- d missile program. In addition to its defense use, titanium has great potential for General commercial application. Its lightness, strength and high resistance to all types of corros-ion have given it a rapidly ex-panding market. The new corporation will be separate from Quebec Iron and Titanium Corporation, which is partly owned by Kennecott and which mines and processes iron-titaniu- m ore to produce pig iron and titanium slag. The slag is one of the starting materials for titanium pigment and titanium metal. CROSSWORD PUZZLE I l W& IHH8 lW,a.'l,, I'M1 I 73 "m fill.
