BJ)JUL FLASHES by Jim AbplanHlp BDAA ACTIVITIES 1956 Another year of BDAA activi-ties is fast drawing to a close, for the year of 1956 that is, but the plans for continuing on are al-ready in progress for a new sea-son. The past few months have seen the regular BDAA programs carried on with a variety of sports and entertainment that the entire membership could en-joy and take part in. Last winter ;s is taking place now, the bas-ketball fans were enjoying the Bingham prep games and follow-ed the Miners up until the final game of the "B ' tourney. The BDAA also helped spon-sor a basketball league at the Gemmell Club, and are doing so again this winter. As soon as basketball season was over, our members went out of doors for the grand old national- pastime, baseball. High school games were enjoyed and the BDAA again sponsored a team in the newly organized Utah State Baseball league. This league was a merger' of the Northwest and Industrial loops, and was comprised of Magna, Midvale, Bingham, Am-erican Fork, Pleasant- - Grove, Provo and Spanish Fork. j Bingham's ball club was made up of mostly local talent, and ' was managed by Herb Babcock.; The local nine had a pretty rough j time, but the games were close and interesting. Baseball ruled the roost most of the summer months, but as the early fall wea-- 1 ther began, fans turned their at-tention to football and the ex-ploits of the Bingham High Min-ers. Bingham again had a fine team and made a very good show ing, losing only to the state champions, Pleasant Grove, and a close battle to American Fork. Early this fall, the BDAA held its annual Turkey and Chicken shoot on two separate week ends. The shoots were purposely held early to beat the bad weather, and a good number of prizes were won by good and lucky shots as well. To distribute the prizes, a no-vel target was introduced by the meet director, J. D. Laycock, and its use was a huge success. The target was on the order of a punch board and if the shooter hit a lucky square he became a winner. Well here we are right up to the present time again, and go-ing full blast with the high school program. New cards will be issued soon, so don't miss the Bingham basketball games and the other fine sports programs that will come your way in '57. MERRY XMAS. . Sports Here and There by Al Ablett Dear Santa: Hope you can find room in your bag to drop off a state champion-ship for Bingham High School basketball team. They have been asking for this a good many years, but you have always pro-mised it to someone else first. This is of course for Coach Wan-kie- r. Dei Schick the football coach, will be satisfied if you can send him a couple of backs to take the place of those he will lose this year. For Gene Fullmer a nice shin-ing middleweight championship belt. His manager Marv Benson says he will share in that. For Coach Jack Gardner a few more baskets for his shooters on the Utah basketball team. Just enough to win in New, York and Kentucky. For Cactus Jack Curtice some nice big fat linemen and a couple of backs that can go a full 60 minutes to meet that back break-ing schedule they have lined up for the next couple of years. For Eddie Leishman of the Salt Lake Bees, a team that can win in the final week. One that can win the pennant preferred. Of course we realize you will re-ceive this same request from all the other owners and you only have one. But Boise has been your favorite long enough. For Coach Kopp at BYU, just bring him some polish so the glitter won't wear off that great freshman team. The same for the Aggie staff and for Coach Faunce you might pick up a couple more of those big Minnesota boys. Santa for the rest of us just keep bringing us the same kind of sports fair as you have in the past. You can include a couple of good fights for the West Jor-dan club if you have room and a championship fight with Gene Fullmer defending this we would really like. For the hunters a few more pheasants and it might be a good idea to include a copy of the Utah game laws to all the hunters. If you did this the pheasants' load may be a little lighter. Nothing you can do about water for the fisherman and a copy of the laws might do some good here as well. Well Santa, will sign off for this year, and take this oppor-tunity of thanking you in ad-vance for all the nice things you have brought us in the past. And on your rounds be sure and wish everyone a Merry Xmas for Sports Here and There. Al Elected president of the St. Mark's Hospital medical staff at the annual meeting Wednesday was Dr. Harold C. Jenkins of Bingham Canyon.
