Show TO SERVE THE PUBLIC . . . YOU MUST SERVE YOURSELF! Now it is our turn to celebrate! The week, Oct. 7-13 is Newspaper Week. The theme is : "Newspapers: your foundation for free choice." Your newspaper is a prime example of a private organization or-ganization which serves the public interest. Independent, and free from government control, it is truly the public voice, We play an important role in the life of the community. commun-ity. We give you the facts, thoroughly researched, so that you may depend on what you read. We also provide a vehicle for our merchants to compete com-pete at the marketplace for your favor through constructive, construc-tive, informative advertising. While our principal concern is to report to you the happenings at the local county and state level, we feel it is an obligation to interpret those national issues which affect us here locally. We do not expect all of our readers to agree with us in our reporting of the news, and we fully expect to be told about the differences. While it is almost impossible to be impartial in this day and age, we are determined to be fair and to win your respect. This is our objective. Through our letter column, and through guest editorials edi-torials we invite different opinions and different points of view. We believe that controversy, and discussion, are healthy means of resolving the problems of the community, commun-ity, state and country. By allowing both sides of an issue to be heard, we believe that discussion is created on the street and in the home. Through this discussion, we have complete faith that the majority will be able to sift the tact from the fiction, and the good from the bad. With, this knowledge, and a conviction to participate, through the polls, public meetings and hearings and private discussion, you, John Q. Public have the power to control the destiny and the future of your community, county, state and country. We invite your comment, we want your opinion, make this your newspaper, make your voice stand out above the crowd; Use the freedom of the press, by using your newspaper, news-paper, your foundation for free choice.
