Show tLti 4 Got a phone call from Dixie Levitt last Monday. Seems he didn't take too kindly to my column last week, but he admitted ad-mitted that he had been negligent negli-gent in his efforts to contact residents of West Beaver County. Coun-ty. In fact he said that he Ihought that the News and the Beaver Press (what's that?) were one and the same. Sen. I.cvitt promised that we would be put on his mailing list and assured us he was available to his constituents wherever they might live. He also indicated that the best place to make this input was thrrugh the Five County Association of Governments. He didn't exactly say so, but we got the impression that one icason he had skipped over Milford and Minersville and maybe all of Beaver County was because of their lack of 'jumping on the wagon' spirit as far as the Five County Assn. of Govts, was concerned. I tried to explain that our attitude was not hostile, but rather one o questioning just what use the organization could serve. And since little information was available, and no one came calling until city hall made a special request which was answered by Neil Christensen, who heads up the Assn. paid personnel. This little political subdivision subdivi-sion is actually an arm of the Governor's office. After the last legislative session, Rampton, a democrat, sent Hy Lee, another Democrat and Sen Levitt, a Republican, back to set up the Five County Assn of Govts, as a pilot project. The idea is to coordinate governmental functions, func-tions, information, etc within the 5-County area and serve as a pipeline to the Governor and legislators. o The pilrt project was funded we unders'and by a state allocation allo-cation of federal funds and it was given a say over the approval ap-proval of future allocations of state and federal funds within the 5-County area. This gives it some teeth, if only in a way. Since lack of approval could hold up such things as Milford and Beaver's Sewer and Water projects. Minersville' s pipeline, and other projects vital to the local areas. This is not meant to be construed con-strued that any undue pressures have as yet been used. But the mechanics are there, and the implication that if we don't play ball, our applications can keep getting lost in the waste basket. Actually at this point there have been no threats, or ommissions, only a veiled implication im-plication that we should establish estab-lish our communications channels chan-nels through the 5-County Assn. o At present, to our knowledge Beaver County is represented by Comm. Fred Harris and Claire Lee, neither of whom have shown a great inclination to protect or promote the interests inter-ests of West Beaver County. Mayor Paice represents Beaver City and Karl Truman the School Board. At this point, my recommendation recommen-dation is that Milford and Minersville Min-ersville get some representation representa-tion at these meetings, and as soon as possible within the organization, or-ganization, before we find our-stlves our-stlves without a channel of communications to either the Governor's office or our elected elect-ed representatives. There are still many questions ques-tions unanswered, many doubts that remain in our minds, but we believe the answers will be more readily available if we work from within than from without. o Speaking of politics, we wonder won-der what the Beaver County Republican Party is thinking, after having elected two of the three County Commissioners and winding up wi!h a Democrat Demo-crat for Chairman. This is the first time we ever heard of the majority party passing out the political plums to the minority party .Wonder if Thurman dares show up at the next Repub-hean Repub-hean caucus. o An interesting sidelight to Salt Lake City's bid for the 1976 Olympics came up when I Continued on Page Six more political football. The U.S. is the only country in the world to wash its dirty linen in public, and that is as it should be, but there is .no reason rea-son that we need to leave it hung on the line, degrading the whole system, in order to punish the guilty. Let's get it over with. o As we were going to press, Feace at any price was getting good odds most anywhere in the world. And as we listen to the broadcast media, exposing the corruption in the Cambodian Cambod-ian army, we begin to wonder, as we have so often in the past, whose, face are we saving? Is the whole world laughing at us and our niave efforts to bring a just and lasting peace to Indonesia? JUST BETWEEN (Continued from Page One) we spoke to Boyd Carpenter, formerly of the Beaver office of ihe Forest Service. Seems Mayor May-or Garn has .never asked permission per-mission to use Forest Service lands. Boyd is now with the Salt Lake office and was to attend a meeting on the Olympics Olym-pics and make a report to us, but w've been unable to make contact due to conflicting schedules. o One thing we're all tired and disgusted with is the Watergate Water-gate affair. Let's hope that ihe trial proceeds without any |
