Show Ribbon Snip Opens Hiway to Coast Ribbon-cutting ceremonies at the 1 Utah-Nevada state line Sunday noon marked the official opening of Highway 21 between Milford and Ely. It also observed the end of more than 10 years of construction construc-tion work on the Utah end of the road. While 2600 onlookers awaited the event Miss Dianne Turner of Milford, Miss Great Basin of Utah, and Miss Alice Howell of New-Ruth, New-Ruth, Nev., Miss Great Basin of Nevada, held the ribbon across the states border line as Mayor Ray Kizer of Milford and City Councilman Council-man William Kaiser of Ely wielded wield-ed the scissors. Mayor Martell Easton of Beaver emceed a brief dedicatory program which included presentation of Utah State Road Commission officials, offi-cials, Nevada and Utah civic leaders lead-ers and mayors and county commissioners com-missioners of Beaver County. Talks were made by William Shirl, Utah State Road Commission; Commis-sion; Rulon J. Ballard, assistant in charge of engineering for the Road Commission, and Bob Griffin, assistant, as-sistant, chief engineer. Following the ribbon cutting, many of the celebrants returned to Lehmans Caves (via Art Brum-bley's Brum-bley's at Baker) for picnic lunches and a tour of the caves. Ranger Steele had arranged a "free dry" at the caves, and no charge was ; made for the tour between 1 and 3 p. m. At Ely, special entertainment was provided by Bud Simpson at the Bank Club and Hank Simpson at the Nevada Hotel, and the Bank Club presented engraved gold . engraved wrist watches to the two Miss Great Basins. Mrs. LuDean Lund is replacing Mrs. Hazel Hillman as cashier in the grocery department at Jefferson's. |
