Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett Another chapter was written in the story of Bingham's tournament tourna-ment history. We lost to Spanish Fork in a game that had everyone every-one standing in their seats at the end. The score was tied at the end of the regular time and in the overtime period they out-scored out-scored us by two points and it ! ended 47 to 45. All I know is I what I read in the paper so I am I not going into details as to how ; we lost this one, but I do know : that we outscored them from the field 18 to 16 so the story lies in the number of fouls that were I called on the two. teams. Span-;ish Span-;ish Fork had 31 tries good and the Miners made nine of theirs. 'Now 1 could be wrong but it hardly seems possible to put ten boys on the same floor and have that much difference in the way they play the game. Bingham lost two of the first string in the second half when Sonny Robertson Robert-son and Jack Mannion went out on five fouls. This didn't help our cause any. Mannion was high point man for the Miners with 13 and J. Swenson for the Dons with 18. j The experts tell me that the j luck of the draw put these two i teams together in the first round i and this will probably be the ! best game of the meet. Their i opinion is that the winner of this I one will go on to win the tourna-' ment and the loser the consola i tion bracket. The Miners played j Union yesterday (Thursday) and won this one going away. Final count was 60 to 42. The fact is I don't think they will come close to losing another one. But as I said a loss like they had can take a lot out of a kid ball club. Like the Brooklyn baseball fan says, wait until next year. I Baseball is in the air for sure ; and on the 23rd of this month Bingham is sending one of their most promising boys off to the wars to try for fame and fortune in our great American pastime. Marion Cowdell leaves for Melbourne, Mel-bourne, Fla., and the New York Giants minor league training camp on that date and the good (Continued on page four) The Milwaukee Braves thought that they had enough to overtake over-take the Bums when they got Odonal and Bobby Thomson, but Bobby broke his leg and will be out for most of the season so they still have a long way to go. I think that the greatest change in a team that one man will make will be in the Giants. Willie Mays is back. What this boy means to that club nobody really knows. They were leading lead-ing the league when he went into in-to the service and without him they wound up in 5th place. So given a few breaks in the health of his pitchers and Leo Durocher will have his club hi the race all the way. On the local scene, the BDAA will again field a team and as the same as last year it will be a young and interesting bunch to watch. The local entry last season had the best young club in the state of Utah and the big league scouts held a number of their boys in high esteem,. So it will be up to the fans to turn out and give these youngsters young-sters the encouragement that they need. So until we hear play ball, this 30. AL The local fans remember Renna wlu-n he played for Twin Falls in our league. He came late in the season and hit that club right into the pennant. Power is the first colored boy signed by the New York club and he had a big year at Kansas City last year. Bollweg us the fellow that everyone ev-eryone thought would fill the shoes of the late Lou Gehrig. For this trio the Yanks got Harry Bird the big pitcher that they had to have. They made one move that could really backfire on them when they let Vic Ras-chi Ras-chi go to the St. Louis Cardinals in one of those funny waver deals. Of course Vic wanted 4O.U00 and he isn't getting any younger but he won 13 games last year and they were all a-e,ainst a-e,ainst the top clubs. If he does as well for the Cards that bunch will be in the thick of the National Na-tional league race. SPORTS HERE I AND THERE (Continued from oaee one) wishes of every fan in Bingham goes with him. Marion has all ' the qualifications to make the' grade and I am sure that he will . give it all he has. He has been j signed to a Oleans contract in the Poiney league. Oleans is in New York state, so Marion will see a lot of these United States j in this his first year. ! A couple of Salt Lake boys ; have been signed by the Bees and are going south with that club. Monte Howard who play- I ed for Provo last season and Perry Per-ry of South high. Monte is an : outfielder and Perry plays in the outfield. Both of these boys have a good chance to make the grade with the Bees according to Eddie Leishman head man in Salt Lake. There has been a great deal of action in the majors in the past winter and some of the trades trad-es that have been made could make a big difference in the pennant race this coming season. , The New York Yankees have been the most active, they gave the Philadelphia A's a couple of young players that could make that team a real pest to the leaders. lead-ers. In Power, Renna and Bollweg Boll-weg they gave away three young men that have power to burn. |
