For example, about IV? years social security work is long enough for anyone who reaches the age of 63 by July 1, 1954. Also, IVi yrs. is long enough for anyone who dies sometime after August 31, 1950, and before July 1, 1954, re-gardless of his age at time of death. (For more detailed infor-mation, ask your nearest social security field office for booklet OASI-35- ). Second, if the breadwinner is alive, he (or she) must be of re-tirement age (at least 65 years old) before the OASI retirement benefits are payable to him or his family. When the breadwin-ner dies, benefits are payable to survivors, if the other require-ments are met, no matter how old the breadwinner' is at death. Third, the breadwinner must actually be retired from social security work, if he 1s under age 75, in order for retirement bene-fits to be payable to him and or his family. (A person is consider-ed to be retired for any month in which he earns no more than $75 in social security work). Per-sons age 75 or over need not be retired in order to draw bene-fits. Fourth, benefits are not paid automatically you must ask for them. Your social security field office is ready to furnish the nec-essary forms and will be happy to help you fill them out upon request. And that is how workers and their families become eligible for OASI benefits. No one should hesitate-- to ask for OASI bene-fits if the above requirements are met. OASI is not charity by any means, and it is not a gov-ernment dole. It is insurance pro-tection paid for by the workers and their employers.
