Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett The Bingham Miners are tournament tour-nament bound at last. They won the right to represent the Jordan Division by taking the Tooele bovs into canon in a eame that will go down as the thriller of the year. They were all tied up at the end of the regulation time and the same thing happened in the first overtime period, so they had to play a sudden death I period and this one found Bing-I Bing-I ham taking the ball after Tooele had a shot that rimmed the basket. bas-ket. Not to be denied the Miners Min-ers worked the sphere carefully down the floor and passing like big leaguers they finally shook Sonny Robertson loose for a shot and he didn't miss. By the time this one was over every one in the big Tooele gym was almost hysterical and the place was crammed to the rafters. Surely this game will go down as the gem of the season. The Miners play Judge here tonight in their last game of the regular season, but regardless of what happens in this one they will go to the tournament and this brings us to the question of officiating. The Tooele game (they tell .me was handled in great shape and at no time was i the play slowed down by excess whistle blowing. , I " In the Skyline Conference" this j year they decided to curb some j of the boys in their desire to be the whole show by tooting their ' whistles on every minor infrac- tion of the rules, especially if the foul had nothing to do with the progress of the game. By doing do-ing this they 'have speeded up the game and in my estimation made it a much more interesting game to watch. But you still hear boos from the same people that last year were hollering that the game was being slowed up by the officials. Now there is one thing we must do, that is to make up our mind as to the type of game we want. One where every little infraction is called or one that keeps the action going by the officials calling only those fouls that have a direct affect on i the outcome of the scoring. This of course brings us back to the state tournament. Bingham Bing-ham this year will be going into the meet as one of the favorites along with American Fork and Hurricane. In the past they have selected the officials for the big event from all over the state and it has been found that there has been a wide difference in the way the men in the striped shirts have interpreted the rules. This is the one thing that will have to be corrected to make this year's tournament the best ever. My hope is that they call them as they have been doing in the Jordan division, not only for the sake of bur team "but for the sake of the spectator as well. I It seems as though there is a jinx on Ted Williams. Every spring the big fellow has something some-thing go wrong just at a time when it looks like he is all set for a great year. He was going great guns when he broke his arm in the all-star game, then he was called back into the air corp and now in his first workout work-out with the Red Sox he fell and broke his collar bone. The doctor doc-tor tells him that he won't be able to play for at least six weeks, but the big fellow says that he has fooled them before and he will fool them again. There is no doubt that the absence ab-sence of Williams in the Boston line-up will weaken Tom Yorks' hired hands in their bid to get off to a flying start in the American Am-erican League pennant race. But there is no use of talking baseball in Bingham Canyon until un-til tne basketball tournament is over. Have you secured your tickets yet? They tell me there I "will be plenty. Next week we' should know the line-up for the event of the year. So until then this is 30. AL O |
