Juli.i Crook. Once more we are called upon to chronicle tbe death of one of our respected citizens. This time the silent messcngiT has beckoned one of our young women, ore that was born and raised in llebcr a tender, ilelicate flower, beloved by all who knew lior. After enduring the pain and torture of disease suffering agamies iinkuovv to any save herself for ten long years, Mrs. Julia Duke Crook departed from this life and entered that great sphi're beyond the inevitable not only of mankind but of all things earthly. But her friends and relatives, believing as most of them do, find consoUtion In a hope that Is expressed in the following simple lines : Pant tliou art toitnt loturnetb Was not w nttun oi tbe soul. Mrs. Julia Duke Crook was born in Ueber. October 2nd, 1809, married to Thomas Crook, December 3rd, 1890, and djeel, of heart disease and dropsy, April 25th, 1891. She was the daughter of John and Mary Duke, who were among the early settlers of Provo valley. The funeral services were held in the Stake house Sunday afternoon where a large circle of friends met to pay their last respects to the departed one. That the mourners liav e all the consolation that sympathizing friends can give was shown by the fact that a tear was seen to trickle dow n many a bronzed cheek, and many a strong mans voice became clioaked when the weeping mourners passed through the crowd from the chapel to the gatew ay. The following lines wore composed for the occasion and read at the services : L1NF3 TO JULIA DUKE CROOK, Once afrain were brought to sorrow, Hter tlcMtr; Through tbo lvwifeof ami daughter, Trusty, fmthful Frleml Mie w us the most Hinoera. All these- things tin- trustees can and in a measure are required to elo. But, as in a children's ditty, the people mil) ask, Win re w ill they git the money from? "Tin res tho mb. It takes to make the mare go, ami it money vv ill take money to make the town go I or t!iis the law provides substantially as follows, givmg the Town Board the power, To levy and collect an annual lax for general corporation purposes on all siuh piopei-tas shall be subject to Comity and Tel ntorial taxes, and such lax shall, vvh-- n so levied, constitute a lieu oil all such property, au-- shall bo colle-- ted as County ami Territorial taxes are- collected; IVnrided, All taxes for such purpose s in one year, shall not exceed of one per cent, oil the assessed valuation of the property so assessed, Unless two thirds of the electors voting at a special meeting called for that purpose, shal vote a larger per cent, to he lev ied ; but in no case shall said tax exceed, nor electors be allowed to levy more than of one per cent, of the assesses! valuation aforesaid in one year. And now conns almost the most val liable feature of the change from onr unorganized condition into firm and solid organization there are othe-- ways of raising money for Hie earn lug ou of the public affairs in a corporate body. I quote 1823 in full : The Board of Trustees of each town may orelain and provide such reasonable lines, forfeitures, ami penalties as they may deem proper, in any sum less than prescribed for like crimes in the laws of the Territory, to be prosecuted before any justice of the peace in the county, in the name of the corporation, and all expenses incurred in the unsuccessful prosecution for the recovery of any fine or penalty, or forfeiture, shall he paid oy the corporation; and all fines, forfeiture and penalties, when collected, shall l,c paid to the corporation, as may be provided I y ordinance: VoriJ-d- , The Justices court shall be always within the corporate limits ;vhcn any other than a justice residing In said town Is called to try any case, he shall be required to hold court in said town. A good deal more is to be said on this subject, vv high Is of importance not only for our Midway citizens, but for all the people iu tho county, those as vvi'll who lie e In organized tow ns as those w ho lb in hop s to become organized.
