Improvements In the methods nnd machinery of education and schools have a value in a mental and moral point of view, which is now pretty generally understood hut their Importance oh a matter of bunim-ei- i is less familiar and is less thought of and talked about. In the matter of instruction now methods, Improved systems, Latest methods etc., has become a hobby with many teachers, principals and superintendents of schools, but the comfort' of the children in the matter of warmth and ventilation has in too many cases been considered of minor importance, This has been carried to such an extent in the past in many instances that it has been thought that anything was good enough for a school room. The fact that the school room should be made pleasant, comfortable and inviting t6 pupils lias been overlooked by school officers, teachers The nnd superintendents. has district school within the memory of many persons now living, been the prevail-intype of school house and apparatus; and, we are sorry to say, many specimens of it still remain to torture the children and retard the progress of education. It is a tlapboarded shanty, a log hut or a staide-lik- e building, built of rock or adobe. Heats that bring to mind the inquisition of the Middle Ages, Perhaps there is a three by eight feet on winch to illustrate the elevated ideas of the teacher. No maps; no globe; no apparatus of any kind, unless you call a painted pail and a tin dipper such, which, we suppose, might he used for illustrathydraulics, physics, and ing hygienics, by showing the practical application of tho mechanics of Jluids with reference to the wants of man, that water will freeze in very cold weather and that tho inside, as well as the outside, of the body should be kept cool ami damp in winter. As for a school library or any real apparatus, you might as wrcll expect to lind an organ or a piano growing wild in the woods. The number of such abodes of darkness, disease and torture, however, is fast decreasing. , Their places are fast being filled by graded schools, with school buildings of elegant architecture, home-lik- e and healthful warmth, and fresh air; neat and comfortable scats and desks; abundance of text books; well chosen libraries; a vuried assortment of maps, charts, globes, and scientific apparatus of all kinds. In fact, an array of contrivances for shortening, clearing, and easing tho way of the scholar, and speeding his progress on the road to learning, is fast taking the dace of those old relies of so much so that the maxim, There is no royal road to knowledge is fast failing into decay. We can with little danger of contradiction, say, there and it u a rmjul road ft) lies through tho improved common school with its modern methods of health, comfort nnd pleasure. Hebcr is now falling into line and steps are being taken to establish a central school here upon the improved modern system, where our children can lie taught according to the true principles of education. Tho building is now being erected and ere another year passes, there will be, we trust, a school in lleber of which the people may justly be proud. The taxes, to raise the necessary amount of means to erect this building, will, of course, be pretty heavy, but we could not spend money in a better cause. The building when finished will accommodate about 150 pupils, will be constructed upon the most improved plan ns regards warming and ventilation, which, in our opinion, is of the most vital important o. The health and comfort of the children should be of primary importance in every school, but in lleber as elsewhere this matter has usually been but a secondary consideration, and one which has been neglected and overlooked. How many of us can recall our school days without remembering tho oft repeated request: Please, may I go to tho stove and warm me? llow many are there, w ho read this that fail to recall the hours of torture spent in the school room, with cold feet in in summer? winter and How many fail to recall the many weary hours spent sitting upon a hard bench, their limbs hanging over the edge, and their feet dang-linin the air several inches above the floor, freezing in winter and suffocating in summer? Is it any wonder that children dislike to go bo tortuiet in this to school-tmanner day after day? Is it any wonder that tho health of many children is broken down and their constitutions undermined during their school days, and that many which of them contract colds follow them until they prematurely fdt the consumptives grave?
