Art anil nature have done much to make the place attractive. Near the bay are pretty villas built of "brick, with piazzas, balconies and green lawns and terraces w her. alifi, jfxacef ill ijuuibuu, Mi"S Us feathery plumes, the thick and scraggy cactus opens its snow white petals and golden stamens, and the weeping willow droops its brandies over rustic seats and romantic bovvers. There are arbors over which the lovely blossoms of the passion flower mingle with the fragrant honeysuckle and the green leaves and ripening fruit of thegrenadiila; orange groves with their dark glossy foliage, the broad leaved fig and bnana trees, their huge leaves tattered by the wind. of the tow n is a low range la the of hills known as the Berea, and constituting the suburbs. There grow in ail their native luxuriance seveial varieties of the Acacia, the Kaflir-beowith its scarlet bet ries, the eastA oil plant, the thorny mimosa, the wild fig. and a curious tree related to the ban an. of India. And ovcriill, embracing all, is the convolvulus, its rich purple blossoms cvcrv-here mingling w ltli the dark green foliage of the trees, climbing even to the topmost boughs and looking down upon their less aspiring neighbors. Ail too soon we were compelled to leave that charming paradise for Pietermaritzburg, the capital of Natal, tiftv miles inland. Half that distance was tiaversed by train. The railroad Is a marvel of engineering skill. IV c reached Piertermaritzbarg early in the evening. The capital of Natal is a town of 7000 inhabitants, nestling in a lovely valley, surrounded by high wooded hills. During onr stay the town w as honored Eugenie, by a visit from the wild was then on her way to the spot in Zululnmi where her son fell. She had particularly requested that there should be no demonstration upon her arriv al, so the people who w ere anxious to see l.ei gatherequieWy in the streets through which she was to pass, to show their respect and sympathy for the mother of the young prince whose drath tl.cv had so sincerely monrmd. The accompanied by a large cavalcade of horsemen, rode slowly through the same streets where a year before, amid the solemn booming of the minute-guthe remains of her beloved son had been borne. As the lovely passed by, her graceful form arra ed in deepest mourning, and her sad, but still beautiful face veiled in black, the va- -t throng raised their hats in respectful silence. Her si jort sojourn was spent at the convent, where the sisters did all in their power for her comfort. We experienced the same kindness and hospitality from the people in Pietermaritzburg that we had met w ith in other parts of Africa, As a teacher I was particularly interested in the schools which t visited, and especially In the young knifes seminary. I was pleased to meet in that far distant land teachers of culture and refinement, and' to'lee how thoroughly the work , of the institution w as done. In company with some friends I also visited an infant school taught by an ancient dame, w ho had had a vast experience in training the youthful mind having been, engaged in that, occupation at least half a century. When we drove up to the door, a little old woman came out to welcome usf arrayed in a full skirt, and a round jacket of rnsty black, guiltless of collar or cuffst her faoe animated with pleasure, licr spectacles pushed back and her teeth a minus quantity. llad we been persons of note, she could not have greeted us more cordially, or felt more honored by our visit! " Wc did not need to be told that hers w as an infant school, for a number of little ones, taking advantage of their teacher's absence from the room, were enjoying themselves after the fashion of children by scampering, singing, shouting and laughing, regardless of all school restraints. I could but think that the denizens of Pandemonium could not have exceeded these twenty-fiv- e little The WSltW-ipoise pp.U confusion. teacher, however, succeeded in securing comparative order by clapping her hands. Then arranging her little band in single (lie, she marched them trouud the room, all singing the alphabet over and over again, as loud as their little voices would allow. It was amusing to hear the old ladys questions. In the most astonishing manner she went from sacred to profane history and from , Africa to, America.
