There is a very eroneous idea in the minds of a few of our citizens in regard to our moral condition. There are men in Ileber who as- sert and claim to believe that the people, both locally and generally, are becoming pore and more immoral all the time that the moral civilization of the world is retrograding. This is a pernicious, wicked idea and is the very opposite of what is true. Each generation rises, taking mankind generally, above the standard of its predecessors in morality, sociality, physical well being, and all that pertains to mans comfort, happiness and pleasure all that makes men better, nobler, purer. We have made an assertion and now propose to prove it, but to do this let us first find out what morality is that we may clearly under-thpremises from which we are to argue. Morality is mans moral duty. Now man has many duties hut they can justly be classed under the following heads: Moral duty, mans duty toward his fellow man; religious duty, mans duty toward God; humane duty, his duty toward the lower animals, and patriotie duty, his duty toward his This classification is country. given by one of the leading educators of the age who says: In a loose and vague way moral duty is made to embrace all of mans An immoral act, then, duties. would be a breach of mans duties toward his fellows something injurious or disgusting to society. Would any one presume to 6ay that we are not more moral than the ancients? We refer them to Mr. Buys recent lecture on the Would History of Civilization. any one dare assert that we are less moral than the people of the dark ages after listening to the horrid mental pic ture of immorality drawn by E. IX Clyde in his lecture Wednesday night on the Wero not the Reformation? first Europeans who sought shelter in America more moral than the savages they found here? Were not the people of America at the time of the Revolution more highly civilized than the people who first settled here? They had at least destroyed that pernicious, immoral doctrine witchcraft an abominable belief which had formerly been held as sacred. Again, were not the people who wore willing to give their lifes blood to wipe ont the greatest of all immoral crimes slavery more moral than the framers of the Constitution who made laws to protect slave holders? The educational ago of the world has begun since the close of the civil war. Within our memory was a time when clildren were not allowed to even look at the pictures in a book on anatomy; today it is taught in our schools. Not many years ago men gave small hoys tobacco and encouraged them to use it; today there is a law against it. Can any man deny that our schools are not in a better condition today than ever before? Would any person presume to say that our legislature is not making our laws more wholesome? Remember this, that on the law and the school depend our civilization of which morality is a part. When we admit that wo are retrograding morally we accuse the fathers and mothers of bringing up ail inferior race of beings, which is To prove it let any man stand on tlie streets of Ileber on a ousy day and take cognizance of the persons passing by who are drunk or tipsy. We can say, without fear of contradiction, that the great majority of the people who stagger down the street will Ih) bearded men. The rising generation of today are setting an example to the older class of people. Where is the father or mother who will say that their posterity is inferior to themselves? There are cases where the parents cquld say so but it is the exception and not tho rule. We have not only heard this on the street, in private conversation, but from the pulpit, and not only of recent years but ever since the time wben we went to meeting with our mother and sat with our legs dangling from the bench our legs not being long enough to reach the floor. But no matter where it comes from, nor who says that the morality of the world is retrograding, we believe, after a research of history, both ancient and modern, that that person is mistaken. Our reason tells us so and we must believe it. e t OJIIIIIIISIJJWH hhji fmmmeammmmmemmamampmmn onment and some of these days cubes aud globes of native horn silver there will be arrests made for this have also been taken out.
