Show 8 MONDAY, OCTOBER 17,2011 THE SIGNPOST Recital continued from page 4 kid," he said. "By my junior year of college, I was playing a lot more viola than violin. I switched completely to viola in 1979." Palumbo has performed one faculty recital a year for the last 30 years he's been teach- ing at WSU. Like Priest, he admitted viola isn't as well-known of an instrument, but he said he believes recitals like his can be great learning experiences for the audience and for music students. "It doesn't matter what instrument," Pa- lumbo said. "It's what you play and how you get the music across." Wang, Palumbo's collaborater, is an internationally known violin performer who will accompany Palumbo during a violin and viola duet, "Three Madrigals." "Music was always my passion," Wang said. "Violin is my passion, but it is only one aspect of music." Like Palumbo and Priest, Wang said he believes music has a way of communicating and connecting with the audience. "Regardless of the purpose they are there, whether for class or enjoyment, every person should get something out of it," Wang said. Palumbo will perform on Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Priest will perform on Oct. 25, also at 7:30 p.m. Both performances will take place in the Allred Theater in the Browning Center. Both faculty recitals are free of charge and open to the public. Children 8 years and older are welcome. which is a bun worn high on top of the head, was unanimously voted as unappealing, and just a "fad that will become a flop." The other style generally labeled as unattractive was leggings. "It's OK if they use them underneath something else, but if it's all they're wearing, it's kind of weird," said fashion student Mack Genkins. Samuels said she tries to steer away from selling cropped sweaters in her boutique because of their look. "The reason why is because, depending on your height and your size, it doesn't fit well on everybody," she said. "If people have that pear shape or they're bigger through their midsection . . . it makes them look bigger." Belts, she suggested, help to cinch the waist and draw the eye to the skinnier part of the body. According to Samuels, belts are currently in style this season and are selling out swiftly at Ume. Her female customers frequently wrap them over cardigans and sweaters. "And that's the bad thing about trends . . . sometimes the trend that is in isn't the trend for your body type," Samuels said. "It's just a fine line of trying to find what works for your body type for the trend that's in." airbrush me a into a Medusa hybrid who lured unsuspecting victims into her chamber, only to feed them to her pet snakes. The 3-D house actors wear wild, neon-colored clothes and faces that stand out with the use of the participant's 3-D glasses. These colors are usually used in most 3-D haunts, and give a person the urge to reach out at a floating face design that might not be there. In the Carnival of Chaos, a lot of good scare opportunities were already built in for the actors. In the Seven Deadly Sins section, each room has a walking timespan of about 30 to 60 seconds. You have that amount of time to create a sense of discomfort within the room before you send them scurrying out. Of course, things aren't always going to go according to formula. You have to deal with huge groups that come in the room, making it less intimate and harder to cover your creepy bases, especially if you're running the room by yourself. I had to be in charge of the Lust Room without any other actors in the beginning, and let me tell you, it's really hard to strike fear into the hearts of a pack of teenage boys when they keep trying to ask for your number. There is also the problem of choosing how to tone the act down for small, frightened children, and how to get people who keep trying to strike up a conversation with you to keep moving. Now, let me say from experience that scaring comes down to the actor, the coordinator of the haunted house and the head makeup artist, and plenty of the veteran actors agreed with me. You can only jump at people so many times before they expect it. Also, it doesn't matter how decked out you are; if you can't commit to your gruesome character, you're going to get a lot more snarky comments than screams. But it's those moments during the night when you cause someone to flinch, scream like a small child and accidentally let slip a few obscenities that seem to make it all worth it. of the theater in eighth grade. He was reading Much Ado About Nothing, and his teacher made each student act out a scene. "I thought it was a blast and was really fun," Pepe said. "I didn't really think I would continue with it back then, though. I did a lot of math and science as a child, so I thought I'd grow up to be an engineer." In ninth grade, he took a theater class because he needed an extra art elective. "That's where I really caught the bug," Pepe said. "I couldn't stop af- ter that." Since then, he's participated in about 30 plays. He said one challenge he faced with some characters, including Romeo, was to stop thinking as much. "It's been hard to get out of my head and just act impulsively and spontaneously," he said. "Acting wouldn't really be as great without a challenge, though, so it's definitely been fun." Pepe said he gets inspiration from actors he looks up to. He has a long list of favorites, but Robert Downey Jr. stands out, he said. "I love him because of the natural charisma that he has," he said. "He knows how to own the stage and is so charismatic. It's one of those things that can't be taught - you just have it - so I love watching him." Pepe's favorite roles to play are ones that put the audience on edge or are highly emotional, he said. "I like putting on a different skin and approaching situations in a way I wouldn't as a person," Pepe said. "Basically, I like playing anyone who's not close to who I am." Although Pepe doesn't like to admit it, he said he related to Romeo, because he is a closet romantic. Kalyn West, the actress who played Juliet, said she couldn't have picked a better Romeo. "We have great chemistry together," West said. "I trust him to support me and back me up when we're on stage together. He makes it so I'm never worried or scared, because I know I can depend on him in every scene, every night, in every show." Austin Archer, the ac- for who played Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, said Pepe is a brilliant actor and puts a lot of work into the characters he plays. "Working with him is great," Archer said. "He brings a lot of naturalism to his roles and a lot of believability." In the future, Pepe said he hopes to continue acting. He knows his acting career won't take off overnight, but he's willing to work hard and wait for when the opportunity is right, he said. "I want to show people from Utah that this is possible," he said. "You can go out there and attack your dreams and make things happen for yourself. You can live without fear and not be afraid to put yourself out there." much experience in it and I was just craving it." After West received the part, she didn't watch any versions of the play, because she didn't want to be influenced about how to play Juliet. "Everyone has this idea of what Juliet is supposed to be, and I just wanted to create my Juliet from the ground up," West said. "Juliet was purely me, and it's like Juliet and I are fused together now." Mickey Larson, a theater major who attended Romeo and Juliet, said she thought West fit the role of Juliet perfectly. "I thought she was so lovely," Larson said. "She was so graceful and youthful and beautiful to watch on stage. My favorite part was when she would dance." Jim Christian, director of musical theater at WSU, has worked with West in multiple productions, and he said West excels in acting, because of her passion, intelligence and energy. "My favorite thing about Kalyn is that she's fearless," Christian said. "She will try absolutely anything and loves the challenge to be asked tc work and work hard." West is a double ma. jor in theater and anthro. pology, because it's "no healthy to become a stric tunnel-vision theater per. son," she said. "I feel like as an art. ist and actress, I've growr more from the experienc. es I've had that are com. pletely unrelated to actin classes," she said. "I was this dorky little seventh-grader," West said. "I had never done anything like that before, but I loved it and got so much joy out of my little solo." After her solo, she wasn't able to dive straight into acting. She was part of a dance company that didn't let their dancers do extracurricular activities. When her junior year of high school came, West decided she was going to do the school musical anyway. "I had grown up being really shy, which can be difficult," she said. "Acting made me feel like I didn't have anything to be afraid of. For the first time, I felt like I had a glimpse of who I was and it liberated me." Romeo and Juliet was West's first opportunity to be in a play that wasn't a musical. "I wanted so badly to have the chance to sink my teeth into this, because I've never done it before," West said.
