Show MONDAY, AUGUST 22,2011 THE SIGNPOST Deans continued from page 1 | P I v continued from page 1 Ekes the idea of professors sometimes giving viewing assignments instead of reading, now that all students have access to certain channels through their ,pvvn computer or the WSU com'puter labs. "Maybe some classes, like for criminal justice or something, .ti^ey have to watch something .jnstead of reading it," Byington said, adding that news channels -or other educational programming could now be used for ,elasses. • ;j Some students, however, will .not find much use for the service, Students who live off campus might not spend enough time on campus to have that much downtime, while other students are simply not interested in TV Micah Green, an undeclared sophomore, said he is "not really a big TV-watcher," and that he is not on campus enough to use the service very often. "Personally I wouldn't really have the need for it, just because I don't spend enough time on campus to really have the desire to watch TV, and I'm never really finding myself in the dorms. It's just I don't have the opportunity to use it. But it does sound like something that I'd probably use if I had the opportunity to. ... It seems like something that would catch on and be beneficial." Jenkins said he thinks it is important for students to get cer- tain perks, like free television, when they come to the university. "Especially for our on-campus students, this is their new home. This is where they're going to live for the next 9-10 months, so it's important that we provide students with some of the comforts that they're used to; especially if they're going through the stressful college life trying to work on their degrees, it's nice that they're able to kick back for 15 minutes between a class and watch some Cartoon Network or Sci-Fi." Another goal is to make WSU's undergraduate science programs the best in Utah and the region, Matty said. "One of the things that really attracted me to this position was the strong focus on undergraduate education and the great things that many of the faculty are doing to bring that to a reality," Matty said. With an office on the north side of the sixth floor of the Science Building, Matty has a panoramic view of the Ogden mountains. Students should always step back after every semester and really evaluate their coursework and extracurricular work, and how their classwork has helped them pursue medicine. A big part of getting into medical school is a full-circle, thought-out realization of why a student really want to pursue medicine. If students go into a medical school interview and answer questions about their future in a very short-term mindset, they are not going to get very far with admissions. 8. Always meet with your adviser if you are stuck or have a question. Students are more than welcome to come in and discuss concerns with the pre-med advisers. The advisers want to help students pursue their own specific goals, not just the goals of a medical school application. His office could change in a few years because next on WSU's wish list for buildings is a new science building that would be constructed where building four and six currently stand, Matty said. Harrold - formerly the dean of social sciences at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota - said he came to WSU because the faculty really care about student success. "I hope we can foster more research by the faculty and the students as well," Harrold said, adding that he'd like to build on the trajectory established by his predecessor while bolstering certain departments with faculty. "Due to the effect of the budget cuts there's a few places where we're short on faculty," Harrold said. "Over time my goal is to get us up to strength in every department." After working as an economics professor at the University of North Florida for 21 years, Steagall will lead a discussion this fall to choose a theme for the Goddard School of Business. "The vision really is to identify what it is we want to be known for, and then to start working on it/' Steagall said. "We're at the point where it's time to define a theme or maybe a couple themes for the Goddard School of Business and Economics."
