"Oncampus parking is just kind of a joke, no matter where you're trying to park." Though this was Siddoway's first time attending the Pops Concert, many in Ogden have made it a family tradition. Former WSU student Ryan Olsen said he brings his family every year. "We come up here every year," Olsen said. "Yeah, every year since I was really little, actually." Heather Tobler says her 6-year-old son loves Weber State University. He loves the duck pond, he's amazed at how big the campus is, and now he loves the purple WSU shirt he got as part of his membership in Purple Pals, the Nontraditional Student Center's latest outreach program. Purple Pals is a club for children of WSU students. Children 17 years and younger can join for $5. The price of joining gets each child a goodie bag with a WSU Frisbee, treats, free bowling tickets at Wildcat Lanes and a T-shirt. Purple Pals also get extra opportunities at activities hosted by the Nontraditional Student Center. "For $5 you really get a lot," said Jill Giachino, a WSU senior and peer mentor. "That shirt would cost $7 or $8." The Ncmtraditional Student Center hosts about three free activities a year. The next one, on July 29, is an art party. All roads leading into Weber State University were thick with traffic and pedestrians on Sunday evening, July 11, but that was nothing compared to the crowd around the duck pond. Nearly every inch of grass on the sloping lawn area was marked with a blanket or folding chair as dusk approached, as students and families gathered for the 32nd annual Lindquist Family Symphony Pops Concert and Fireworks. "They usually say about 20,000 come/' said WSU concert usher Annette Schwartz. According to Schwartz, however, attendance was estimated to be down slightly this year, due to the timing of the event. The concert celebrates Pioneer Day, July 24, though it always is held on a Sunday, which placed this year's event on July 11, almost two weeks before the holiday it recognizes. The space around the pond was available for guests to reserve their spots starting 6 p.m. on Saturday night. At that time, however, parking lots A-l and A-10 were closed for the weekend, making parking space an issue for some guests.
