WSU missed out on a repeat performance Saturday, though, dropping the second half of their backto-back home stand against the Montana State Bobcats, 59-76. UM went into Friday's game ranked No. 2 in the Big Sky Conference standing and riding a four-game winning streak. After taking a quick lead, the Grizzlies gave up a steal to WSU center Joey O'Neill, resulting in a fastbreak layup by WSU forward Caitlin Anderson that gave the Wildcats the lead with 15 minutes remaining the first half. WSU held the lead for the next 28 minutes of play before the Grizzlies regained the lead with seven minutes left in the game. The Wildcats and Grizzlies traded the lead for the next four minutes until a layup by O'Neill with 1:20 remaining gave WSU a lead it would hold the rest of the game. With the Wildcats up by two, UM sent WSU guard Sarah Conner to the free-throw line twice with less than 12 seconds on the clock. Conner made all four of her free throws, securing a four-point victory. Anderson posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to contribute to the win. "Caitlin had great backto-back games," Taylor said. Hockey Team falls 6-4 to Arizona Friday The Weber State University split games this weekend, losing to the University of Montana Friday, Feb. 5 and beating Montana State University Saturday, Feb. 6. Saturday's win insured that WSU would keep sole possession of the No. 1 record in the Big Sky Conference. "It's really close throughout the whole league," said Head Coach Randy Rahe. "I think you can go all the way towards the bottom and you can look at teams like Sac State and Eastern Washington. They've proven they can play with anybody in our league as well. This league is very even, and even the teams that are struggling and only get a couple wins are good enough to be the upper tier teams." On Friday night UM opened up with a 7-0 lead and never looked back, the Wildcats never led in the game. Guards Anthony Johnson and Ryan Staudacher led the Grizzlies with 18 and 16 points respectively. Sophomore Damian Lillard led the Wildcats with 24 points while juniors Lindsey Hughey and Franklin Session added 12 each. Session added in 10 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and one steal. The difference in the game was free throws, UM shot 28 fouls shots, hitting 21 of them, and WSU only hit six for 10. "No. 1, I thought that Montana played terrific," Rahe said. "They were aggressive, they were really on top of their game, very hungry. They are a highly, highly talented team, probably the most talented team in our league. I thought our guys went out there and tried. We got beat by a good team on their court. They had an outstanding crowd, the biggest they've had in a few years." -t» i-rGuard Nick Hansen didn't let the team off the hook so easily. "It was just, we weren't dialing into the game, we weren't moving our feet and there's nothing else that we can say other than that we didn't come to play and weren't moving your feet," Hansen said. "Obviously when you don't do that you make bad decisions and foul. That's pretty much what happened." Hansen said the team was more focused for the game against MSU, and the Wildcats won 75-71. Lillard added a team-high 25 points along with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Session added 14 points and forward Kyle Bullinger scored 10. "Tonight we all knew how big of a game it is, especially when you're on the road, anytime you get out with a win it's a big win for you," Hansen said. "Our mindset all day was just take it one game at a time. That's all we do. We were just focused on our game, we had to have a short memory with last night and kind See Still No. 1 page 7 Team president Tim Brownell injured in loss, early diagnosis sprained LCL By Joel Robbins correspondent I The Signpost PHOTO BY FRANCES KELSEY | THE SIGNPOST Weber State University center, Dane Ludolph, fights for the puck during agaisnt a University of Arizona defender during the first of two games last weekend. Weber State University's Hockey Team fell 6-4 against the University of Arizona Friday night. Team President Tim Brownell suffered a sprained knee late in the second period. The score was goal-for-goal until the third period. At the beginning of the third period the score was tied 4-4, and with 14:41 minutes left in the game UA capitalized on a scoring opportunity when goalie Paul Pflueger unsuccessfully cleared the puck from behind the net. Striking UA player added pressure to the goalie, causing the unsuccessful clearing and intercepted the puck, which led to the scoring on a net guarded by only a WSU defender. Head Coach Steve Soto said he felt the team played well but needed to capitalize when they were in front of the goal. He said he felt the team was passing too much when in front of the goal instead of taking shots. UA took the lead, scoring with 11:13 minutes left to play in the first period, and WSU never managed to take the lead. WSU did not have an answer for the first goal until 7;6 seconds left in first period when center Chris Roberts scored an unassisted shot to tie the game 1-1. "We tie then always get that penalty or goal against us that leads us to lose," Roberts said. "I was happy with our effort, there was nothing else we could have done." After Roberts scored the tying goal, UA pulled ahead five minutes into the second period for the second time. However, five minutes later Tim Brownell came out of the penalty box just as Braxton Green started on a breakaway up the left side. Brownell exited the penalty box just in rime to be ahead of all the defenders, which led to a wide-open pass from Green.
