All \ faculty is eligible to apply for the program from now until Oct. 15. Once the £ applications have been •1- submitted to human resources (HR) they will . be reviewed by Provost ^ Jf! Jvlichael Vaughn and the 'S-dean of the department the applying professor is a member of. This review process is intended to determine if the faculty , -. •. member's departure would ' '" both save the institution money and strengthen the department the professor would be leaving. On Tuesday of this week, HR reported that four faculty members had r • T already applied for the " " VSIP. HR has chosen not ••-•' disclose any names until •-•" • the applications have been :'•'••• . r e v i e w e d . .;.".•. •r.-.-. *; • ; ;-. • . According to a written notice sent from HR to faculty members, all faculty who separate under the program will be offered a one-time incentive payment equal to 25 percent of their 200910 annual base salary, but no less than $15,000. Some positions that are left vacant are expected to be filled by faculty who command a lower salary. Barry Gomberg, WSU director of affirmative action said that any new faculty members may have more recent training in the field or exposure to other institutions that would allow them to "bring a richer mix of ideas and strategies to what we refer to as the marketplace of ideas." On the other hand, Gomberg also said, "If I were a student the thing I would worry about the most would be the lack of institutional experience that those faculty would have." As the type of knowledge and skills students seek changes, Gomberg said that the VSIP will give the university more flexibility to meet the changing needs of students. "If we could hire someone whose area of specialty met an unmet area of interest than that, would be a programmatic benefit," Gomberg said. After faculty applications for the VSIP are accepted or declined, Gomberg will be responsible for ensuring that there was no discrimination in the decisions that were made. Cherrie Nelson, associate vice president of human resources, offered a summary of the university's decision to introduce VSIP. "I think it's a very responsible thing to do," she said, "because it gives us an opportunity to encourage people who might want to change careers, or move in a different direction or those who have been thinking about retirement to give them a little extra incentive to leave, and it helps us manage the budget cuts that we need to manage." "That is what democracy is all about." There are five possible topics for the DDP, with the senate deciding on which issue will be used for the forum. Another issue discussed in the senate meeting was a Times and Issues forum that offers discussions on current related issues for each college. The College of Education discussed the No Child Left Behind Act last week. The College of Business and Economics will hold the next forum, but the topic has not been announced. Senators may also be carrying iPod touches with a special survey application. Student Affairs will be checking out the iPods to senators as a new channel for offering surveys to WSU students. "We will be looking at 'man on the street' surveys to find out what students feel about certain topics," said Student Affairs Assessment Coordinator Jessica Hickmott. The surveys can be given • to students and the data will be gathered and can easily be produced into a printed report. Bentley said he felt the senate meeting went well and believes the changes made will help the senate in the future. "I think the meeting went surprisingly well today, considering this is just the second meeting. I anticipate that as we go along further in the semester that. the senate will be in excellent shape to present themselves in a really nice way."
